Re: What would you do if your bank...
ok for all you who think that this is far fetched
Country: USA
State: North Carolina
Bank: Bank of America
Account: Checking Account
Event: 10,000 deposited by mistake in my friend's account
YES I saw it in the statement and online account summary by my own eyes (its not he said that she said that they saw.....). Bank later contacted him and told it was 'computer error'. He returned the money and as token of appreciation, they waived his account fee for 12 months.
Re: What would you do if your bank...
pinch myself to make sure its not a dream:D
Re: What would you do if your bank...
I recall reading a story like this a few years ago (the incident took place in the UK or US, I can't remember). The amount wasn't as high as a million, it was in the tens or hundreds of thousands. The person withdrew the money and spent it.
A few weeks later the bank identified the error. When they contacted the person and found that the money had been spent, they had the person arrested for theft.
At the trial, the bank successfully argues that the person knew that they were not supposed to have had the money but took it anyway, and had them sent to jail for a few years.

Re: What would you do if your bank...
Another example:
Happened with my bro's friend.
Someone deposited DH 180,000 by mistake into my bro's friend's account. It was not the bank's mistake rather the individual's mistake.
If the money is transferred by an error from the bank then the bank has the legal right to reverse the transaction. On the contrary, if the error is made by an individual account holder then the receiving individual account holder (in this case myself) has no legal obligation to return the money unless he or she signs an authorisation for the bank to reverse the transaction.
Re: What would you do if your bank…
This is true. Money erroneously deposited to your account which you know is not your own cannot be spent or withdrawn by you - it is considered to be theft.
However, let’s take the case of the New Zealand couple who received millions in a bank error and managed to withdraw a sizeable amount before the bank realized its error. The error was so large they had enough money that they could run away. Mind you, they’ll be on the run until caught, but with that much money they can buy new identities.
The scenario is a moral dilemma - do you keep money that’s not your own, and what about the repercussions of such actions, does it even matter?

ahh the good old days when people were the ones stealing money from banks, and not vice versa..
Re: What would you do if your bank...
what kind of question is this
Re: What would you do if your bank...
^ hypothetical kind?
Re: What would you do if your bank…
Something similar happened to a friend of mine back in undergrad… his printing money was topped up to 150 euros one day
System error or something. He never reported it and used it up all year long lol.
All postgrads get a thousand euros deposited in their accounts every year for printing/photocopying purposes. In the beginning of this academic year, my account read 11,000 euros instead of 1000. I took my time reporting it because I was mad at the computer services people for not updating my windows as I had requested them to do a million times. ![]()
Re: What would you do if your bank…
I’d accidentally forget to give it to them back ![]()
Re: What would you do if your bank…
Buy all active posters on GS for that date/time an iPad so I don’t get ratted out. ![]()
Then call the bank and tell them I too made a mistake, and bought things. Please take back the rest. What’s the worst that can happen? They’ll yell at me over the phone? ![]()
