What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

Do you remember?

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

was heading towards class when a classmate rushed by saying that someone flew planes into the WTC. and that initial reports were it was the Palestinians.

tbh, even though the images were shocking when you look at the video, the attempt in itself wasn't for me. I spent a significant chunk of my childhood in Saudi Arabia when the imams in 95% of mosques would conclude their jummah khutbas by praying that God destroy the kufaars, enemies of Islam, etc. and how Palestine, Bosnia etc were bleeding. so, things like 911, Faisal Shehzad were inevitable.

I'm frankly surprised when Muslims say that they were shocked by 9/11. look at our masjids. look at our preachers and what they say in the mosques. 9/11 was inevitable - it was just a matter of time.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

We were in college. Late afternoon. Shocked everybody. And when they started to say it was Muslims, all the Muslims responded with "That's bull****." Man were we wrong.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

i don't remember, i guess it was from the shock and the fact that i was traumatized from it. for weeks i lived in front of the tv watching CNN. couldn't really function, was more like a zombie, learning stuff in class and coming back home and i actually slept on the sofa in front of the tv, with the news on most of the night, had the alarm clock next to me. but i was a total mess. Didn't really know what would happen next.

honestly i wished i wasn't desi at that time, having those certain features made me totally paranoid and freaked out. plus a close family friend was traveling on a flight to new jersey at around 8:00-8:30am close to the time it happened. he could even see the smoke from the building he was in in jersey, across the bridge from the world trade center.

So traumatized is an understatement of what i went through.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

yeah I remembered that horrible night, we were in late night shift including me there were six americans in our crew and dozen other local country peoples. It was mid night over when a an american run down towards me and was screaming Hey Man did u heard the NEWS, he was just went out for a break out side of building and was relaxing in his car while he watched the news in car monitor.... he was in panic and frustated in all sudden all americans gathered around us.

There was the TV only in office room and we went there and watch the news that time only one plane hit the tower and it was some fire and smoke on the top flooors of towers, we are like stuck and no body was talking. later on our superior call off the work two hours before as usual and every body went back home. i watch it later on tv at home how both towers hits by planes and later collapsed on ground.. They all knew that I am only muslim amoung them and routes in Pakistan, but they never blame me either Islam for that tregedy, some of them still my friends and some go back to USA.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I was crossing the bridge in Geneva during my break when my mom called me!!! I was quite shocked!!!

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

It was my junior year in high school, and we were coming out of 3 period class, going to the 4th and the TV was on in the classroom showing the towers being hit...man it was a shocker. At first, everybody was thinking it has to be a hollywood movie or something. Eventually, later on did we know that it really was reality and that planes did strike and collapse those buildings.

Later when I got home, turned on the tv and by then it was every where in the press being reported and covered.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

for some reason, the image i can't forget is of that woman that was on one of the top most levels of one of the buildings, was standing on the ledge b/c inside was just smoke and fire and the ambulances/firefighters hadn't gotten there yet or couldn't reach her but she just jumped b/c she had no choice at that point.

obviously she was one of the ones that died but I remember her crystal clear in my mind :( :(

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I am sure that dua in Friday khutbahs has been in place for decades and suddenly there is a connection of 9/11 to those khutbahs, thank you for connecting the dots :k:

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I was entering my work building when I saw couple of people standing under a TV with all the shock on their face, I was clueless, I took the elevator. When I got out of the elevator I saw people panicking around, I was still clueless. When I sat on my chair I immediately received a call from a friend saying that its in news that some planes have been hijacked and one has been slammed into a building in NYC, he said to be cautious as there could be some outburst. After spending few minutes I went home as my parents had come to US only 2 days earlier and spent time in front of tv with all the shock and trauma. Next day when I went back my director called me in the office and said if anyone says anything to me or tries to include me in the blame in any way he will be taken care of, in my opinion that was great support shown by him :k:

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

i was in school, my teacher got a call and my dad picked all of us up. I was in brooklyn and we could see the smoke all the way from here

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

so, your problem is with me saying that these hatefilled khutbas that promote a victim complex among young people and brainwash them are one factor why ppl join up these terrorist causes. but you don’t have a problem with these imams who themselves go home to shag their 4 wives but want the young kids to go fight for some sham Islamic ummah in far off lands?

btw, if these sermons that have been going on for decades and are a-okay by you, why don’t you invite your director to your masjid and translate your imam’s khutba especially when he starts cursing the kufaar and wishing destruction upon them. I’m sure he will continue to support you after that.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

no i dont remember that b'coz i was so small(young) at that time and i got that new but didn't give importance to that:@:

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I was writing a paper that was due for my 10am class in the computer lab and the guy next to me had CNN up on his computer showing that the first building had been hit. I asked what was happening and no one had any answers. In a matter of minutes, the school closed down and everyone was told to vacate the premises. My first reaction, are we still expected to hand the paper in?

Getting off the campus and back home was an ordeal. I needed to take the shuttle bus to get to my car and directly across from the school was a federal courthouse which was put in lock down mode - the building was surrounded by about a dozen swat team members with their rifles out. The 5 minute shuttle ride took about 25 minutes because streets were closed down and the driver couldn't figure how to get us to the parking lot. Then the drive home took about an hour and half (was usually a 15 minute drive) because everyone was fleeing downtown Philadelphia - all of the commercial towers were being evacuated.

The entire time that I was trying to make it home, I was panicked because I knew someone who worked in the South tower. I called home and asked has anyone heard from Bhai yet and at that point the news was sketchy. Thank God, he did made it out safely, but the anxiety over what could have happened was horrible.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I was at my first day of kindergarten.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I was heading out of the house when I actually happened to turn on the T.V. and it was all over the news.....I still remember them burning and finally collapsing.......and how they kept replaying it over and over .........I didn't get what was going on but had to leave for school.......the first thing I did was head to the library and the libarian locked us in, turned off the lights and shut the blinds..........I was young at the time so I really didn't understand till later..............

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I had just landed Jakarta from Singapore and was in hurry to catch a connection flight to Bali.A co-passenger told me about the news.Later that day after arriving Bali ,I was trying for my friends and relatives in U.S,to hear from them. But it seemed all phone lines were jammed.

Then it was all there on news channels ............. I saw the faces of the western tourists especially of the American tourists. There were confusions and a sense of concern in the air.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I had come home from 24 hour duty and had slept with the tv on. When i woke up, the first tower was on fire, i just lay there thinking it was some sort of accident and then while watching saw the second plane hit the towers, thats the shock woke me up.

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

***Strangely that is one day I think everyone remembers starkly.....

It was a Tuesday , evening and my sisters were scheduled to fly that night.

I was on msn talking to my friends when i noticed a contact sign in wwith an interesting msn signature ...it said ****** If not by land by air , we strike again !* *****and i wondered what he was talking about.

That's when Dad got a call from the Air Base asking him to come in immediately as there was an Emergency Red Alert .......That's when we switched on the TV to see footage of the planes hitting the Towers.........It was surreal and felt like you were watching some movie trailer and it wasn't really happenning !***

Re: What were you doing when you heard about the 9/11 attacks?

I was in class and a professor came running into our classroom crying that our country had just been attacked... class was immediately dismissed and my sister was waiting outside. We walked to the library and saw the news online and proceeded to the bus stop...

Everyone was giving us the dirtiest looks like we were directly responsible. We could see and hear the F-16s flying above and patrolling the skies (since we were only 1 1/2 hours from the World Trade Center).

The smoke could be seen billowing from the top of any building at our university...

Afterwards, school was cancelled for quite a few days. And the Muslim girls began taking their hijabs off out of fear, rightly so, Muslims started getting harassed and assaulted, cars with any Muslim identification (Allah signs, etc...) were vandalized.

We later found out that my cousin's cousin was working in the building but was one of the lucky ones to escape. She is disabled and uses a wheelchair, and everyone kept passing her by ignoring her pleas for help and some kind soul got her out of the building. Her car was destroyed but Alhamdulillah she survived.
