re: What were you doing at 8:46 AM EST, Sept. 11, 2001
I was at work and my co worker came running to my office that she heard on the radio - the world trade center was hit. SO I called my sister in law and she was like Hinaaaaaaaaaaaaaa mainey TV pey dekha....woh girrrrrrrrr raha hai.....Yeh kya ho raha hai, and the there was all this hustle and bustle, I called hubby, my boss, etc, ran out to the patient waiting area and saw it live on TV.
We all left for home early as they were evacuating high rise buildings.

I was getting ready to go to college. Before I left house, I came to the living room and the TV was on and they were showing it live. The first plane had hit but the 2nd one hadn't hit yet. I thought this is just an accident, some plane got their coordinates wrong and hit the building. I went to my class and everyone was talking there and making it a big deal. I remember that evening my friend's family had arrived from Pakistan and I was dropping them off at their home and every radio channel was talking about it.

i was in school and the principle came on loudspeaker and asked if anybody has family working in or around wall street, a few minutes later, they made the announcement that the towers were hit…i called my mom (cz my brother worked and lived in midtown manhattan at the time) and she was crying (out of relief)..

On that dreaded morning, i was in my class. I'd just gotten there 10 minutes earlier. Class ws to start at 8:30AM.
Everything started as usual, we were just warming up into the lecture for the day, when the professor was called outside by security personnel. She came back and informed us that an aircraft had hit a building in NYC. At first people just shrugged their shoulders like maybe it's one of those light cessna type 2 seaters, got lost, brushed against a window or something. I remember another guy joked saying could be another Timothy McVeigh.
After about 10 more minutes we were ordered to evacuate the building, and everyone was sent home. Still puzzled and clueless because it was something that almost never happens. Came home and it just blew my mind seeing the tragedy unfold. I remember being glued to the t.v. that entire day and pretty much for the rest of the week as well.
It was sad and confusing at the same time seeing all that happening...could not believe my eyes.

I think people in North were a bit more shocked/frightened instantly, while it took some time for the folks in our town/class to realize what was going on. My wife (who is from NY) tells me that she was in school and as soon as it happened, they were sent home. When she arrived at her bus stop, her parents and other kids parents were there to receive them. Everyone was scared, confused, and just sad.
As for me, as Teggy said, I took it lightly at first (watched the news only for about 10 minutes and left for class) thinking some small plane got lost, crashed, BIG DEAL! But it was really terrible to see people jumping from the building and the buildings collapsing when I later saw the coverage on the news.

I was driving to a client site, listening to a cd, changed to radio and some morning show dj was talking about a plane hitting wtc, i thought it was another one of his stupid stunts or some commuter plane of some exec hit the bldg, went back to listening to the cd, a little while later turned back to radio, heard that a second plane had just hit..thought that the stunt was getting dumn, switched back to cd..got to work and realized it was all real.
