What was Salman Butt thinking

When he decided to bat this morning. even a novice like myself looked at the weather this morning and thought whoever wins the toss will bowl first. Not Salman Butt, he wanted to put a score to defend and what a mighty score the team put up. Surely he should have learnt from Ponting’s decision to bat at Headingley.

To top it up they drop three catches.

pathetic is too generous a word to describe our team.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

Strange decision made by an un-experienced captain ... It seems he didnt read out the wicket properly this morning before the game ...

Even England said they would have batted first.

It doesent matter if we bat first or second, we are simply not
good enough.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

yup i dont think if v have batted 1st v could have made more than 100

Not necessarily, had we got them out cheaply in swinging conditions , it could have been a different story. We might not have scored 200 runs but the mindset changes. Moereover when your batting is weak, you dont commit suicide but trying to prove that you can bat in difficult conditions, you put the opposition in and put them under pressure.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

He is a young captain, give him 15/20 years to mature. Now off course being on the world stage before becoming a captain for long does not count :)

I agree ehsan bhai but remember Imran Khan used to say he would always bat first, take his chances against the seaming ball, and then cash in later.

That was his philosophy. Agreed that Butt and his team and no where near as classy as the teams Imran led but still you have to admire that he was trying to back his batsman.

The fact that they failed yet again is depressing but I dont think the toss would make much difference. These guys are capable of screwing up batting first or last...mentally they are just not tough enough and they all lack technique and fighting spirit.

Besides Asif and Amir, none of the others would find a way into the Pakistan team of the 80s or 90s...they are just not good enough.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

Thinking? Apparently not! Did Waqar Younis not tell him anything about conditions?

If that was really Imran Khan's philosophy then it's a stupid philosophy. Bat first no matter how bowler friendly the conditions are? No! You put the opposition in and exploit the conditions and get them out cheaply (around 200 max). Then you carry on with that upper edge over the other team. Unfortunately Pak has wasted these opportunities. But that doesn't mean you start taking the even more risky route of trying to bat first in seaming conditions. against ENG bowlers.. who are made for this exactly this.

I've stopped believing that this team can ever perform...whether its batting first or second. They can only win against Zimbabwe in tests and that too if they play in Lahore or Karachi.

Im sure if England batted first they would have at least gotten 300-350 and we would have been bowled out for under 100 again.

We are just not good enough. We should stop fooling ourselves that the toss or the sun would have changed things because it wouldnt.

These bunch of clowns are a disgrace to the national colors.

As for Imran, he had guts, intelligence, technique, class and mental toughness - all of which every member of this Pakistani side lacks.

we did not waste a lot of time at the wicket.....the whole team was back in couple of hours....what i am trying to say that when england came out to bat, conditions were not that different had they batted first....the clouds were still there, the ball was still swinging and we had a new ball to start with.....englishmen would have sscored at least 250 had they batted first and anything above 100 is more than enuf for this particular f..u..c..king pakistani team....so bat first or bat second...does not make any difference....result will be the same...lanat ha...

Not really there was moisture in the pitch in the morning as well. yes the clouds were still there and the ball was swinging but unlike Pakistan England didnt drop three catches. The point is that when you are the captain you are supposed to use your brain and try and make the best of what you got, but our captain thought batting was our strength.

There in lies the problem

It is a sad and painful truth

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

Agreed that the current Pak team is just not good enough to compete with most teams in test cricket.

But they still have a match to play right? You still have to pick to either bat or ball first. Even if we all know that both options will probably result in Pak losing.. still have to choose the better option!! With bowling being the strong point.. swinging conditions..it just doesnt make sense to try to bat first with a batting lineup like this.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

Agreed he should have bowled first

but with this team whether they bat first or second is purely academic

It will only affect the margin of defeat

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

It turned out to be a poor decision. One should always back strenghts! and our strength is NOT bowling. He may have wanted to lead the fight from the front but the line was too fine between bravery and stupidity. This one turned out to be the latter.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

the confidence was shattered of the bowlers

He wasn't thinking.

Re: What was Salman Butt thinking

We should also blame Butt for dropped catches and everyone's batting weakness against swing bowling in Pakistan. We succumbed for 100 odd against Ireland in WC with Inzi, Yousuf and Younis in our side just because the ball was swinging. So making Salman the escape goat is not fair. He is as bad as any of the other batsmen from Pakistan against swing bowling.
