so heres the deal people: i got married a few years ago alhamdulillah been thinking for some time now what to do with my barat and valima lenghas! i will never wear them again and they are just sitting wrapped up in plastic. part of me wants to keep them for my kids, to show them one day! but another part of me * is itching to do something with them. after spending so much money on them it seems a shame to have only worn them for a day!
so just curious to know what everyone does with their dresses after the big day? i dont know what can be done with the skirt part of the lengha but the dupattas at least i want to do something with!!
one suggestion i was given was just to match the color and make a shalwar kameez to wear with the dupattas. because the dupatta is so heavy with kaam [practically broke my neck!] so it can off-set a simple kameez. one of my friends did this, her dupatta was a soft peach color with rusty orange kaam, and she got a simple rusty orange color suit sitched sleeveless with capri and then wore the dupatta with it and peach heels and purse and it looked so hot!
but what i would really love to do is —make a sari out of the dupatta. would that be possible somehow?! it would look soooo gorgeous! can it be done, maybe by adding some cloth to the inside part to make the wrap-around bit of the sari or something? i dont know!
i want to take both dupattas to pakistan with me next visit but want to be armed with some good ideas before i go —dont want to carry these heavy babies all that way for nothing!!

you don't have any siblings or close cousins who might get married? usually the dresses are worn again to other weddings if you're close to the bride (and in no danger of competing with her dress haha :p)
you can always keep the shirt as-is, get a matching shalwar or pant made, and wear the outfit either with a newer, lighter dupatta, or with the same dupatta even, depending on the occasion. i don't think gharara dupatta's are long enough for saris, but you might be able to do a plain sari and somehow use your dupatta for the palloo part?
but that Edhi idea is pretty good too and very generous! :)

my mom wore a sari for her wedding aswell and got it made into 2 lehngas, for me and my sister. I loved that lehgna and wore choose it over all my other clothes

Sum of my dahej (dhaaj) lengahs were used to make new outfits, sum were passed on to Islamic Releif n other charities, n have kept d main outfits to pass on to my daughter, as i 100% beleive dat all this stuff we wear will b back in fashion 20-25yrs down d line... i kno i thanked my mum for saving sum of her good gear for me which i wore throo my teenage years.. lol

I'm wearing mine to my BIL's wedding, most likely. You can wear it again to other close weddings, if you like. Or you can get a lighter top made for the lengha part or pants made for the top, so you have new outfits to go with it.
I like prototype's idea too, especially if you feel you won't have an occasion for it.

i wud defently keep them, i was thinkin i defently want to wear my wedding suits after im married n i thought when i get my lengha done then mayb i can have a longa kameez on 1 of them and get a shalwar or pyjama made at the same time to wear with it after?

I had mines sealed in an airtight box..from which you can see through..it,s done for bridal gowns..most of the upscale dry cleaners have that option..and ofcourse they are special..so i just want to save them.

Have an anniversary party every year and wear it and take pictures. Then put it in one of those albums where it shows what you look like every year and it wil amaze you at the end of 10 years or so how the dress looks the same, but you seem to change!!

When i get married i will definately keep all my shaadi dresses with me for as long as i live. Yes, at times one might think that they spent a fortune on their dress so why not make some use of it and thats fine. But i would never be able to give it away to anyone even a sibling. Maybe because i love collecting memories and events like weddings hopefully dont happen more than once so i would like to cherish each and every memory associated with them.
Having said that, we can still make use of those dresses and wear them again. Maybe use the dupatta and make a new dress to wear with it. Or if you wore a short blouse/shirt than wear it with a saree. So much can be done especially if you are some1 like me who likes to mix and match.

i plan to wear both my wedding and valima dresses at least once more, im just waitng for some of my close cousins to get married :(
even after that though i dont think i would have the heart to cut it up into something else, i think im just going to keep it wrapped up and save it, its such a special outfit!
