I read magazines and if I don't see them I ask for them. If I am finished with the ones in front of me, I ask for more. I don't see a better time-pass then reading. Alternately I listen to music if its available on-flight system or from my own MP3 player. I usually fly to US so for a 4 hour max flight reading is enough for me.
Re: What to do during flights and transits?
Depends on where u from to US from!
Reading ofcourse is good, besides that one can sleep ![]()
Or watch movies, like one flight from NY to Dubai I watched all the sequels of LOTR, back to back.

If you have a laptop, you can find internet in the transit lounge and kill time. Youc an roam around for a bit and shop/window shop if it's a big enough airport. You can also look up the airport website to see what they have to offer for transit passengers.
For the flight, there's books, and movies. If you like writing, it's a perfect time to do that. I sometimes like to keep a journal of my travel, so I end up writing (or typing if I have my laptop) during the flight.

My laptop's battery life is about 3 hours. I don't know how well that would work out.

If you are traveling with family or friends, board games, cards are great way to kill time. If you are traveling alone it is a great way to make new friends. :-)
Re: What to do during flights and transits?
I have the best idea. during your transit stay go on internet and remove me warning. :)
Re: What to do during flights and transits?
Start talking with the person next to you!
Re: What to do during flights and transits?
^ these people are a few inches away from you. why be anti social and stare into a magazine when their stories will give you it's amazing the types of people you'll find. some of the most interesting people i have met have shared a seat next to me. on long haul lights real friendships can be developed.
some stories:
-i've met a texan, cow boy hat and all on a flight to karachi. he was going there for surgery. the guy, a grand father at the age of 60 had chosen pakistan over india because his doctor in houston was a pakistani. it melted my heart when he talked about his grand children. no stereotypes of texans does justice to what this man taught me about a people few have understood.
-i've met a french canadian on my way to london, bound by language we drew diagrams and shared snacks for 7 hours. he had a day to spend before his tour group took him around europe, and i regret to this day that i did not offer to show him around a bit of london. he walked down into the tube, and it was there that our friendhsip of a few hours ended.
-i've met another french canadian on a domestic flight who was suffering from a severe cold. the poor girl, maybe 20 at most was so paranoid i'd mind. i told her i didnt mind, i just had the cold - she could sneeze on me and i wouldnt flinch. when you're stuck in a plane, in a seat you didnt chose, it's comforting to know your neighbour isnt an ass.
that is all :-)

Re: What to do during flights and transits?
I usually do that myself when I travel alone. Although you really come across extremely weird people sometimes.
I remember one flight in particular, when I took a connecting flight from Amman to Karachi which had a short 40 minute stop in Dubai. (August 2001) I had heared a lot of stories about Dubai and on that day they all seemed to be true. That was actually my first impression of Dubaians. Thankfully that impression has changed a lot in the meantime, especially since I moved to Dubai myself.
But on that particular flight, the people that boarded the plane in Dubai were mostly plain Paindoos. Every single one of them had one of those "Made in Taiwan" kind of tape recorders in his hand. Almost half of them were wearing Dhotis. I was like: Ye main kahaan aa gaya hoon?
The guy who sat down next to me seemed to be somewhat of an exception at first sight. I started talking with him during the flight when he told me that he runs a business in Dubai. But when they distributed the disembarkation cards to be filled out, he asked me whether I could fill it for him. I told him that he has the option of writing his details in Urdu on the other side of the card. And he was like: "Sir, mujhai Urdu bhi parhni likhni nahi aati." I didn't say anything and filled the card for him. Obviously his businessman story was just made up.

One excellent author (Nobel prize winner) Gabriel Garcia Marquez!
When you read his books u’d feel like u’ve been drilled in nature, dragged thru mud and flown thru the skies. U’d feel like u were right there when the story was going on. Start with “One Hundred years of solitude”.
