What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

I have an argument with my wife. She says that one should stop eating 10 min before Sehri is it true ? All my life we stopped eating a min or two before the Azaan.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

It is obligatory for the fasting person to refrain from things which break the fast from the true dawn until the sun sets. What is means is when dawn breaks, not the adhaan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)”
***[al-Baqarah 2:187] ***

**It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If one of you hears the call (to prayer) and the vessel is still in his hand, let him not put it down until he finished with it.” **

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

^ i hope u read the article completely and realized that this eating and drinking is not allowed during the fajar azaan....

read this, from the same article u posted above, to clarify this....

We have stated that if dawn breaks and a person has food in his mouth, he should spit it out and complete his fast. If he swallows it after knowing that dawn has come, his fast is invalidated. There is no difference of scholarly opinion on this point. The evidence for that is the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar and ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with them both), according to which that Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Bilaal gives the call to prayer at night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktoom gives the call to prayer.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim.

if u have been for umrah/hajj u will realize that in the masjid-al-haraam, even today, there is an azaan given before the fajar azaan....
it was this azaan which is mentioned in the hadith posted above....

once the fajar azan is heard u have to STOP eating and drinking, and as is mentioned in the article, spit out whatever is in your mouth....

to be on a safe side, it is recommended to stop eating/drinking 5-10 minutes before the time of fajar azaan....
but one is allowed to eat/drink until the time of fajar azaan....

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

^^ Thank you Mughal Bhai. That was the answer I was looking for. JazakAllah.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

According to the same website, what you said is bidah!

http://www.islamqa.com/index.php?ref=12602&ln=eng&txt=Imsaak

Imsaak (stopping eating) a few minutes before Fajr is bid’ah

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

^^

The website says that making it haraam to continue eating a couple of minutes before fajr is bidah.

Armughal did not say that. He said it's ok to eat right until fajr, but that it's recommended to stop eating before that to be safe.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

it was always my understanding that u can eat til u hear the Adhan.....

is there any evidence that it is recommended to stop eating a few minutes before? i was always under the notion that this was a paki thing.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

but how can it be recommended if is it bidah? it is clearly written in the above link that stopping a few minutes before is an innovation. Correct me if im wrong.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

we finish before azaan like 15 mins

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

And that recommendation itself is bidah as per that website. There is nothing in Islam that recommends stopping eating before fajr, or maybe there is and the website is wrong.

That would be like saying that it is recommended to wait 10 minutes after maghrib for iftar just to be sure you don’t break the fast too early. That would also be bidah.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

According to what I have read...

there are two dawns, the first one is -al-fajr al-khadib- which is false dawn because the sun begins to rise andyou see a vertical line in the sky but then disappears.. and then there is the actual dawn -al-fajr al-sadiq- when you see light horizontally across the horizon..

so, you stop eating just before fajr adhan / dawn.

and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn (Al-Baqarah 2:187)

islamonline.net says that stopping eating 10minutes before fajr is preferred but people **need not be confused or concentrate **on this issue.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

There is difference of scholarly opinion on this issue. The thing that I don't like about islamqa is that they don't say who is the author behind that answer. They should do that to avoid confusion.

Some scholars say it is preferred by many say it's just tradition.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

my understanding is you can eat until fajr time...it would make sense to stop a few minutes early.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

u will have to stop eating before fajar azaan, if it is not by minutes, then it will be by seconds…

and if u wait for the last second, u might as well be caught swallowing after azaan, which will have nullified your fast before u even started…
if u r willing to risk that, dump the recommendation and perhaps once u face such a thing u will take the recommendation from the next time…

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

hmm good point

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

That makes sense to me, to stop eating a minute or so before dawn/fajr azaan. And I believe the islamqa website is a salafi website, which is why they call everything as bidah. There are many other questionable things on the website now that I have looked through it a little more.

Allah knows best.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

JazkaAllah Mughal Bhai. You are one of the few people on this site to have a very nice composed and straight forward knowldge abouot islam. Thank you for taking out the time and keeping ghun-e-ghaar's like myself, close to the right 'right' islam.

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

of course you gonna find them questionable,

i was surprised you were actually quoting that website. LOL

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

What if there's no azaan in your house, and u just go by teh clocK for every namaz but maghrib (we have TV on where azaan comes on)? I get the prayer timings from IslamiCity..
So to stay safe..I just dont eat sehri :biggthumb

Re: What time Sehri Should be Stopped ?

^ skipping sehri is not allowed....
as per hadith, the difference between the fasting of muslims and others is "sehri"....
