The OP has only asked what ethnic group people belong to. I don't think she's debating the merits of the whole caste system/ethnic groups or whatever. Its a simple enough question. So you can be a Muslim and belong to a caste/ethnic group. Islam does not say deny your heritage. So lets not argue about this or whatever. Its not a big deal.
I'm Rajput > Chauhan > Gujjar (That's how the classification lies). But ofcourse when asked who am I? I answer Pakistani first.
Edit: If you're going to say Pakistani or Indian or Arab, then it doesn't really asnwer the OP so allow the pointless replies.

i wasn’t talking about the caste system at all. why did the issue of the corrupted caste system come in, ethnic groups have nothing to do with caste 
are we to deny the love for our languages and the diversity south asia has when it comes to all the different sub cultures
we don’t need to be arrogant about our subcultures,languages or religions but we can be proud and it’s a part of who we are and our identity whether as a whole when it comes to nationality we’re pakistani, indian, afghani, nepali, bangladeshi, and/or american.

so how is it in pakistan then, are there no individual subcultural foods or languages, does everybody speak urdu and make general pakistani food(which would be what?) in these times? I don't know that's why i'm asking. not really to question anybody's pakistani-ness so please don't get offended.
so if a person whose ancestors were pathan, that person would marry another pakistani muslim regardless of what subculture or language that person's ancestors were of?

I don't know why everyone's got their panties in a bunch over a simple thread. There's nothing weird about asking a person about their ethnic group. When did she say it was wrong or right? She's just asking a bloody question 'eh?
And Nisha, it depends on the family. Some people are open to that and some people aren't. But as far as I know, most ethnic groups prefer to marry 'within'.
