Yeah I dunno. I wasn’t born in Pakistan and I’ve spent almost all my life abroad but I don’t consider myself an ABCD. Someone here once told me I was the arab ABCD… whatever that means.

Desi’s that cant fit into eastern or western cultures , they cant connect to either culture and desperately feel the need to have a separate planet , are ABCD’s ..
we all have that in us , only that some are gone cases , some are still lingering about successfully..

born and bred abroad but with a lot of family from back home and parents still trying their best to adhere to the original cultural values and trying to blend in both the cultures!

C - This is the part I don’t get… “confused” about what?!?
D- desi is relative term… Doesn’t this word denote “country men”, meaning from where you come… So actually, for someone like me, fellow amreekans *are *desis… Yes or No?!?
I speak Urdu fluently, without any accent…I go back to Pakistan to visit when time and finances allow…however, to call myself anything but American would be ridiculous. I really dislike the ABCD moniker

About the **C **part. Their are different kinds of confusions, cultural confusion is just one of many. ABCDs have a lot more options compared to regular folk, they have a lot more exposure, hence the have a greater chance of getting confused somewhere along the road.

confusion could be equated to striking a good balance b/w two cultures as to there is no absolute cultural shock methinks.
But rather than for ppl who are born and bred abroad, I think the first generation people who do move abroad after spending a good two or three decades in Pakistan or country of origin, are the ones who become the maximum victim of confusion. They have to come to terms with a totally new culture while upholding to their moral/social norms they had been taught by their parents and people around them.
It gets worse when half the family is still settled in some of the suburbs and smaller towns in Pakistan/India etc and some of them then move abroad. Their kids get to struggle with a very weird confused bunch. Thus the generalization and dislike towards desis by some of them

They like to call themselves americans…but get offended if someone tells them they not pakistani.
get confused trying to make a mix of western culture, islamic principles and desi tradition. Keeping hopping between the three and consequently don’t have any frame of reference to draw comparison and conclusions.

Desis who speak with a posh english accent and who pretend to not understand or know urdu/hindi yet converse with their own parents (usu. illiterate) in Urdu/Hindi/Punjabi at home

Post-internet, post-dish network, I think we’ve got a new breed of ABCDs that can’t tell where novel-inspired drama’s skewed (read preachy) morality ends and real life’s not so clear cut choices begin.

No one can tell you you’re not a Pakistani if you have a Pakistani NIC.
