What if my mom was born in Pakistan and my dad was born in India but moved to Pakistan at age 5. Then, after he became a Pakistani citizen he migrated to the US after which they both became US citizens. Does that make them Pakistani? What about me? I was not born in Pakistan.
Do Pakistanis believe people outside of Pakistan are no longer Pakistani?
Well, here are my observations of what makes someone a Pakistani:
(1) Being a Muslim -- Pakistan is unfortunately an Islamic country, so majority of people there are Muslims. I can understand that my parents were born and raised over there and that's why Islam is ingrained in their brains. I don't believe in Islam, but I still need to pretend that I do so my parents don't get emotional about it and I don't want to hurt their feelings.
(2) Cousin Marriage/Arranged Marriage -- Phew, thank God I was able to convince my parents to NOT marry me to my cousin! But many Pakistani's believe in cousin marriage.
(3) Being born and raised in Pakistan.
A big NO. we own them and are proud of them. Because we know, patriotism is not and cannot be imprisoned within the boundry lines and borders. tera Pakistan hai ye mera Pakistan hai
wow ... thts all you guys can say abt being pakistani?? only negative stuff?? really dissappointing!!! tht's like complete generalization! and sorry tlk but most of the time your jokes are pretty lame!! agree with naabigh!! .. its funny you guys make it sound like jaise ppl from other nationalities are flawless!!
^ its not that any Pakistani would want to find faults with and poke fun at their country. Not at all. This is what is precisely happening everywhere. Disappointing? YESS!!! go ask a common man is he hopeful? about himself, his family, his future, his life even? and all because we let it all came to ourselves. It would be sensibility not to bring Pakistan in comparison with any nation. We simply stand nowhere in terms of comparison. Truth is always harsh but better than living in fool's paradise.
who is living in a fool's paradise here .. everyone knows wht going on .. and they do accept the reality but the last thing Pakistan needs is negativity!!! there a always a dawn after dark!!! inshaAllah we will come out of this!! ... but here we are not talking abt the Pakistan current affairs .. she just asked wht are the characteristic of being a Pakistan!! .. all you guys are saying here is chigol khori and backbitting ...
@Reha i am just asking out of curiosity... was there a point in your life where you decided that Pakistan should be a part of your identity...? or was this concept always there?
I mean, do such desis decide they still want to call themselves Pakistanis or having such a connection is natural?

Oh sorry, I left out 'being sarcastic' and 'rude' ...
Don’t get all riled up Rangoli. Most often the folks you see talking like this are the ones who actually support and help their countries in ways that actually matter. It’s one thing to just talk sweet and another to make a difference.
no Niksik im not being mean .. ive witnessed this behaviour zillions times from some of gupshup members esp ppl who are living outside!! they always bring out the worse when to comes to Pakistan!!

Oh we LOVE Pakistan anyway. Its just like acknowledging the real state in which we are, and the way we behave, as a nation. There are always positive and negative aspects, everywhere. Unfortunately in OUR case, the negative ones are more and so fast spreading, they have swallowed the bacha kucha positive ones too.
And for the better understanding of GS folks here, its actually the people living IN Pakistan who are more disillusioned and unhappy and bad mouthing about the country than the other nationality holders. Those are rather kind and considerate *because *they have their own version of "our land of the pure" "the fruit of the sacrifices of elders", the Pakistan, they might have changed their views once they had a chance to come and live and survive here. Ofcourse we all are making it, but with this bleak a present, Im not much hopeful about the future. Negativity is not the last thing we need as Pakistanis, we need a wake up call.
