Obviously being born and raised in Pakistan makes you a Pakistani…but for those of us who have been either raised in one country (US/Canada/UK/Middle East) or moved around alot, what qualities do you think makes up a “Pakistani”?
Back to the topic. If you ask in the terms of patriotism, or the pride in the feeling of being a pakistani, I sadly confess I hardly find anyone. What I find actually around is: frustration, cursing, insecurity and terrorism. Complete violation of laws, slumbering justice, corrupt govt institutions, manipulating politicians and usurpation of rights is what make us pakistanis.
I hope the next posters bring in some positive elements, if any.
Despite living outside Pakistan most of our lives, we can still call ourselves Pakistanis because we can relate ourselves to many things Pakistanis can be proud of like:
Our culture. That may not be according to Islamic teachings but I love our traditions and values. The way we celebrate weddings, child birth, ramadan, eids, Eid-e-Milad, Shabraat, Muharram etc.
The importance of families which also include extended families.
We Pakistanis love to eat. Her waqt khana khana khana
We still have respect for elders and we still value our grandparents and consider them as rehmat in our homes
The institution of marriage
Some things which are not good but still dinctinctive in a Pakistani include:
Very odd Islamic beliefs including Taweez, Jadoo, Buri Nazar, Waszeefas etc
Importance of mazaars, peers, buzurgs etc
Not following Islam correctly and made our own interpretations (e.g. nikah is considered just as engagement by majority of Pakistanis)
Considering Quran-e-Pak just as a book giving it a respect but not understanding it (kissing Quran-e-Pak is more important than reading it with translation)
Family politics and interference
Cast and class consciousness
Negatively talking about our country, system, government and people (and not doing our individual role towards the solution)
Please be a kind one and point out the 5 threads in this forum that talk about postive traits of pakistanis and I will show you 100 that talk about negative. These are pakistani people discussing pakistani people. Either they are wrong (which makes them chughal khor and back biter) or they are telling the truth. In either case I am right.
Having a Pakistani Passport , Pakistani ID Card (Nadra approved) or Having your Over Sea's Pakistani Card..... even if u dont have any of em but u know u qualify for one then you shld Consider Yourself Paki :)
well going off topic but i can show you more then 10 threads - where being Pakistani is respected and commended …
now about on more thousand occasions where people have acted negative … it is human nature to propagate and discuss more about something bad happened to him/her rather then bringing the good things happens to him on daily basis …
Technically having a Pakistani passport or eligibility of having one makes you a Pakistan citizen.
But when most of us talk about being a pakistani, it has to do with patriotism, pride in Pakistani heritage, celerating the Pakistani connecion etc.
By this defination many people living in Pakistan won't be "Pakistani".
