What makes Kusuma cry...

This makes me so unbelievably angry. Even animals don’t stoop to this level. All of them are b@@tards. The Sri Lankan government should be doing more - and as for the Saudi and Lebanese governments… those officials who are responsible for turning a blind eye to these events, i hope they never have to feel the pain of what these maids have to go through.

Work is torture for Sri Lanka maids, Frances Harrison, BBC, 24 November 2003

[thumb=D]_39478261_kusm6483_6169768.JPG[/thumb]

What makes Kusuma cry is not the memory of repeated assaults but the look on her children’s faces when they saw her in hospital.

“After three months, I asked Madam for my salary and she started to beat me with iron bars and wooden sticks,” the maid explains of her time in Saudi Arabia. “Sometimes she would take a hot iron and burn me or heat up a knife and put it on my body.”

Kusuma is still trying to understand why her employer treated her this way when she had not done anything wrong. Kusuma says that one day her employer just tired of her. The employer said they were going to the police station and that Kusuma would be arrested. Instead she just put her on a plane back to Sri Lanka, knowing she would never be prosecuted for torturing her.

Sri Lankan Minister of Labour Mahinda Samarasinghe assures maids that the government “has been taking these issues up with the relevant authorities and they have been in the main responding positively”. What the heck is this ? The “relevant authorities” don’t give a darn - time to try another more forceful approach i think]

However, labour activists say it is essential Sri Lanka operates a blacklisting system for rogue employers.

The minister says that will depend on the co-operation of the Saudi authorities, who have not yet agreed.

A recent survey by Colombo University found a quarter of Sri Lankan maids had suffered problems such as abuse or lack of payment while abroad.

The Bureau of Foreign Employment runs a counter at Colombo airport to help returning maids with problems. It says on average 50 a day come back in distress.

Lebanon does operate a blacklist system for bad employers, but that did not help 41-year-old Soma, who recalls repeated rapes by the 18-year-old son of her female employer.

“When I went to his bedroom he closed the door and removed my clothes and his. When I tried to resist he threatened to kill me,” she says.

Soma says she begged him to spare her on the grounds that she had a son his age.

“Another day, his four friends came to the house. When I took tea to the room they closed the door and kept me on their laps and started to touch my body and abuse me,” she says in tears. All the men then raped her.

There was little comfort from Soma’s employer, who seemed to think she had employed a prostitute for her son rather than a cleaner for her house.

“I complained to his mother and she just said, ‘I will give you pills to make sure you don’t get pregnant’ and she beat me.”

Soma eventually escaped from the flat and walked for four hours until she met by chance a Sri Lankan couple who took her home, fed her and took her to the embassy. Although the rapes were reported to the embassy and police, Soma was just put on a plane home. Nothing happened to her rapists.

**“We are not in a position to say, ‘Look here, ensure that all of these things are in place otherwise we will not send our people’,” says Minister Samarasinghe about the need for better insurance and health cover if something does go wrong.

Migrant workers make up the largest net foreign exchange earner for Sri Lanka and the country has a huge unemployment problem, so it often cannot dictate terms to richer nations.**

Training the maids about what to expect is a key issue.

“If a person is trained at the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, I don’t see that person will have a problem,” says Shoaib Abdeen, who runs the Mount Lavinia school for maids.

The government says all women going to Arabic countries have to take basic language courses and learn cooking.

Those going to the more lucrative markets of Singapore, Hong Kong and Cyprus get extra classes like map reading. The maids are advised not to run away from their employer if they encounter problems but maintain a positive attitude.

Given the high failure rate of women workers overseas, it might be better to teach an escape plan should the need arise.

[For legal reasons Kusuma and Soma are not the maids’ real names]

I wish we can put that "madam" up against the post and punish her with 80 lashes at least and oh BTW the whip should be dripped in hot oil so every time it touches her skin it takes away the flesh. These people disgust me. They are the scum of the earth. That madam will get hers. Khudda kay ghar dair hay andher nahi.

khabees arbay.. i cant stand them

stories like these were common about the maids from philippines and other countries in that region in KSA..

the people from these countries were treated like dirt, not that pakistanis and indians had many laws protecting them.

The downfall of these countries and the trouble they find themselves in is probably due to all the ghumand and gharoor.

These ppl should pay for their crimes..too bad i dont see it happening here and now.

Not that we Indians and Pakistanis treat our servants as well as we should. But at least we don't iron them when they ask for their paltry salary.

Now that I think of it, it also happens in our country.

I remember when I was in Pakistan, my cousin would scorn me for talking politely to the labouring class (mochi, kumhar, dhobi, naii etc.), even the adults would laugh at me for talking to kamzaat loag. :(

fkin arabs. hate them. insaan ko insaan nahien samajhtay jahil log.

Sounds like an appropriate punishment to me.

Maids, domestic workers, servants, however one wants to call them - are treated badly in many parts of the world - we have had cases in Canada of illegal immigrants coming here, being promised 'decent and fair' employment, and then subsequently being abused for years. They felt unable to speak out to the authorities/police because they didn't want to be deported, so they bore the abuse in silence for years.

Sadly, my point is - everyone is guilty of this, not just one government or one country's people. The Sri Lankan government itself should be doing more... i know they're in a tricky position too... but honestly, applying gentle diplomatic pressure to the "relevant authorities" is doing jack for these women.

Sick.

i want to know that despite knowing the facts that servants are not treated well in these countries, still these people tend to go there and face the punishments. why don't they just bycot these countries and look somerwhere else for better opportunities?

Italians and Irish (among others) had similar problems in America once upon a time.. their solution was mafia. Sounds like Lankans need to fight back. I won't cry if one of those slavedrivers gets disemboweled.

I am sure it happens, but its not as common. My parents always taught me to treat every one as you will like to be treated. I never saw my Mom abuse (Physical or verbal) to any of the folks who worked for us. That is one of the reasons it makes me so mad when people think that they own someone just because the other person does not have the same amount of money as they do. Its just sick.

dear sharabi, i've lived in mideast for more than 15 years, i have seen things that u havent. i know how ignorant n friggin idiots they r. my opinion wasnt established in just one day. and as for pakistani landlords.. do u see me taking their sides? they r as ignorant as anyone cud be. but these stupid arabs think they r superior than all the south asians.

maybe we could limit our criticism to the cross section that does wrong.. I may even share your sentiments but labelling a whole race like that just isn't fair to the rest.

so you saw people getting punished and mistreated by these so-called stupid ignorant arabs and then what did you did? did you report to any authority / police to arrest and punish the culprits? yeah may be they are friggin ignorant and idiots but then you urself are not better who saw such things and still kept her silence.

if arabs think they are superior to asians then who gave them the chance to think that way? these same asians and people like you who even after seeing everything, decided not to report to voice concern over such matters.

r u kiddin me? u try raising ur voice there and then fear that ur wife or daughter will get kidnapped n rapped in the mosque! who is going to listen to u? the police certainly won't. there is no democracy there, its the kingdom. try changing anything and get ur head chopped off in silence. have u been there? seen the ppl? i may be wrong to generalize my opinion to the whole race. u have to go through the things i have seen, heard or experienced first hand , its not the assumption based on reading newspapers or listening to CNN. i was there during gulf war, i know what happened to the families there. i know how maids r treated by these rich *******s. i know what they think of bangladeshis there. i know to them pakistani indians r just "miskeen". they dont respect ppl on the basis of ethnicity, except if u r gora, then they will lick ur ass like u r the God.

What the hell are u talking abt....daughters and wife getting kidnapped in the mosque!!!!......If u are just trying to prove ur point, than atleast make up something which is believable.

What I am trying to say over here is that there are bad people everywhere.....There are arrogant and proud arabs, i know that, many of them are. But at the same time Arabs are known for their hospitality. They are one of the most hospitable people. So dont stereotype them....just cause there are some arrogant arabs out there.

Sec. Iam born and bred in Dubai....i know what goes on there. Who treats who like **** and why they treat them like that. The general Pakistani "mazdoor class". I agree they are treated like ****, by the police etc. But why....do u have any idea. Our "pakistani bhais"...they are not exactly how shareef they seem to be. Our Pathan bhais......were caught doin an act so obscene, i dont find it appropriate mentioning over here. I mean the normal middle class and upper class dont have any problems with Arabs. I have Arab friends....and they give me so much respect.

So being a girl...i guess u just heard stories, from others and formed ur point of view...I have seen what goes on there. I have so many close Arab friends....i know what they are like.
