What makes a society insensitive?

Re: What makes a society insensitive?

Interesting. When I went to New York, I was amazed at the rudeness on the highway…and I wonder what contributes to that? When there are too many people, do they become immune to the needs of others? Us it the weather? What is it? In my state, I went to the post office a few weeks back and there was an scrawny, elderly woman sitting hunched over outside the building. Almost all the people that had to pass by her…whether they were exiting or entering the post office or coming from another direction…stopped to check if she was okay. I saw several people do this. When I was in Times Square (NY) there was a beggar sitting outside a store holding a sign of need…and he looked up at the people with an expression of disapproving astonishment at how…sooo many folks walked past him and nobody glanced his way. I didn’t see any other beggars in the area and if there were, they were not as obvious as him. I’ve a feeling that he might have received more attention if he were in my state..Or at least maybe more people would have looked at him if not helped him. Maybe I’m wrong.
