There are some people who lease their vehicle, and thus end up with the newer gen. every 3-4 years unless you do a buyout at the end of the lease. Then there are a few sub-types in Finance or Purchase category.
Some who buy to keep till the wheels fall off, or engine needs replacement. Or, those who drive it to a certain mileage mark, and then trade in and trade up/down to something newer.
What kind of vehicle owner are you/your family? Please state your reasons.
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
We have 4 cars at home with everyone driving their own as usual. I have 2 of them purchased while 2 are leased. Leased cars provide an opportunity to get a new car after every 3 yrs or so while low maintenance as well. But yes it gets costlier in terms of downpayment , installments and taxes.
Also there are restrictions on mileage.
So ideally i'd like to hv atleast one purchased car and rest can be leased.
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
out of 7 vehicles that we operated in last 18 years of marriage, one was leased. We enjoyed it, but I dont want a lease option anymore. Only reason being that on your financed vehicle, you will eventually pay ot off and then there will be no payment. Lease vehicle is like if you have the vehicle, you have the payment.
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
I prefer the buy option too for the ownership reasons. Lease is good for worry-free maintenance like brother SID said, but it's like renting long term.
So, how long do you keep your purchased vehicles? Either within finance period, or after you have paid it off? And at what point do you feel you just have to get something else?
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
i lease...the reason being the new car that i get after every three year lease period. i also save on taxes which is 13% in Ontario. i can also claim tax exemptions for leasing a car for work related use.

Honda Civic is a very solid vehicle. You still see the two decade old models running around like it’s nothing. :k:
This makes you the “Drive till wife forces, or till bolts start to fall off kinda owner”. Very practical in that it’s just a vessel to get from point A to point B.
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
My dad gets seriously attached to his cars. So once we buy, it’s here to stay.
He bought a Toyota Corolla as his first car in Canada. Since then the car has been through its fair share of minor accidents, as all my siblings and I learned to drive using that car. Unfortunately, the car stills works fine, so dad refuses to sell it.
We had purchased a minivan for road trips to the States. Later, traded it in for a hybrid cuz it was eating up too much gas to drive in the city.
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
Aren't lease vehicles expensive since the dealership calculates its own depreciation formula? I remember reading that even without a 0% loan, you are better off buying if you are going to keep your car at least 5-6 years.
I haven't been in a situation where I kept a car by choice till the wheels fell off, but it will be a test how long my SUV lasts. I think that 8-10 years is good enough and you should probably move on unless the car has had very little to no maintenance. Of course, "regular maintenance" is different for everyone especially a person with a luxury vehicle might spend more to keep it in shape than a subaru or a toyota, ford etc.

… meaning that you own 7 right now… what a loaded guy!
Didn’t honda have its transmission horrors in the last decade?
My 90s accord had all sorts of problems like new axle, radiator, and oil gasket, oxygen sensors + convertor but thank god that my transmission never went kaput. Some I didn’t even bother fixing like my radio was gone for the last 2-3 years and the CD player was gone in like 2007, but I guess if it is too old then you just dont’ care anymore.
Re: What kind of a vehicle owner are you/your family?
I know that mid 90s Honda Accords had horrible Thermostats causing overheating issues. Not sure about Civics having trans issues. I think the reason most people rate these calls so highly is because Powertrain components last a very long time, requiring only bolt-on repairs/replacements like the ones you mentioned.

Oh yeah, I did have to change the compressor on the car.
The transmission issues are well documented. It seems that the minivans fared the worst? though it was present from civic to pilot to odyssey. Anyway, i got tired of driving honda and decided to try something new.
Now, I ain't rich like TLK bhai to to "try" german and american cars and foot their bills!
