Re: What kept you from messing up when u were teen
Mirch- we were taught responsibility from an early age, and with that comes maturity. I think since grade 6 I have essentially been responsible for my own clothing and shoes, cleaning my room, all that. I had teenage years very different than most. I stayed at my grandfathers house mostly from 14-16, finished high school/inter 3 months before I turned 16, and was US all by myself in college before I was 17, moved out of dorms and into a fraternity house a week after I turned 17. I had access to, and freedom to do almost anything at that time.
Note, I did not say religion, morals I just said logic helped me make decisions to avoid things with consequences I was not willing to face. That does not mean I followed things that were in line with religious teachings or morals that I was taught. I questioned much of it, and did not always find satisfactory answers, and even now as much as I love and respect my parents and as close as we are, there are some differences in our way of thinking and our views. We have had discussions on the divergent views, and in most cases they have been very intellectual discussions, but not in all cases.
My Dad’s once advise to me was along the lines of, I think I have taught you well to make the right decisions for yourself. That was true, very much so, but he knew more than me that while he had given me the tools to make rational decisions, the ‘yourself’ portion freed me to be who I would be, and that would not always be the same as what he wants me to be. I was never really forced to be anything or do anything, except when it came to studies, I did not have much to rebel against. To be inquisitive and to be on a divergent path was more of trying to be me, than rebelling against anything.
I remember one dialogue form one bollywood movie “Gharib ka baccha , bachpan say direct burhapay main dakhil ho jata hay , jawani aatee hee nahi bicharay per”
aap gharib toh na thay magar Lagta hay kuch aisa hee ho-a hay aap k sath.
