Not trying to sound funny, but I really can not imagine why a man would want more than one wife, as it would seem to me, that the wives would become close to each other, and gang up on the husband.
If anything the practice of polygamy is more to the woman’s advantage. There are times when it would be so nice, if my husband did have another wife, and he could go to her house for awhile!!!

beleive it or not, in Saudi Arabia, women themselves shop for young brides for their husbands which include the reasons that you described above.
I didnt know the mormon church had outlawed the practice. Polygamy is against US laws, and for all I knew they stil got many ploygamous households in Utah.

However, what is the difference between prostitution and marrying multiple wives (recycling included) to satisfy lustful desires? Aside from that one is legal and the other is not. Pish Posh. Fine this is what the Quran says, but many men conveniently forget that it is discouraged in another clause in which it says that no man can treat two women the same. Hence the controversiality of the allowance of 4 wives. And since this subject is still heavily under debate even by scholars, I say there is no fair way that this rule can be integrated into law. After all, if I'm understanding your bootlegging example back there, there is no way to regulate this law. How do you know what the intentions are of any man who is planning on taking on another wife. You may argue lust, but in the example of the wadera, how do you know that the wadera is not acting to protect a village girl against unjustices being done to her?
I stick to my main theory and that is regardless of what the law says or what the Quran says, we need to educate our women (especially rural Pakistanni women) that there is a loophole available for them throught the nikkahnama.

PCG, then what is the difference between cohabitation i:e living without marriage and being married? Indeed marriage sanctions the sexual access of a male and female towards each other and legitimizes it for the soceity. It is a universal institution and is the most basic unit of humans as social beings.
What I think you were trying to say is that ideally it would be a monogamous hgousehold which is most encouraged. Maybe. Perhaps its even true, since having more than one wife is described as a “privilige” and people are directed to follow the guidelines. . In that there are no controversies surrounding this. And certainly there are no heavy debates. Islam is very clear about the provisions.
As regards the intentions of the man. There is really no way to now except to judge a person by the actions. Sure, it could be that a certain wdeyra really feels the need to protect a particular girl being harrassed or persecuted by some people. In that case, ofcourse we would see that the girl herself would say that she hasnt been coerced, the wadeyra himself would have a good benign reputation, and the girl could even point out people who want to harass her. Unfortunately, There are many cases in Pakistan in which the rich lanlords actually do coerce a girl in to their household against her will.

what i dont understand is if one woman can be satisfied with a single guy some guys say they cant be satisfied with just one woman?? thats pretty frustrating and thats theyr excuse for marrying more than once!
