might be a relationship for you, but it doesnt seems to be very strong one. and there is no soft way of breaking relationship. as he cant leave his wife for any reason. there is no pleasent end in sight for you, he might be fine to carry on like this.
give him a call or on same medium as you use to communicate. tell him we are leading to a dead end and you dont think its good path to folllow. so you are ending this relationship.
then dont try to be friends, cause it never work, "a friendship can end up in love, a love cant end up in friendship"
so after that, just break the communication, time will heal your and his(if any) feeling.
