SSG is Special Service Group, though popularly referred to as Special Service*s* Group. The Wikipedia article is good detailed, but lots and lots remains mysterious and intriguing about the history, achievements, capabilities, training and the men of SSG.

Let's hope they deal with all the fundo's efficiently, but with their commanding officer killed, close to a dozen SSG killed, and dozens dead in the mosque, it doesn't seem like they are doing too well.

TheRealDeal, it really is a shame that so many fell, but unfortunately this was a high risk operation where the commandos had to kill the terrorists while taking care not to kill hundreds of non combatants, while determining within fraction of a second if it was a non combatant or not. Unfortunately in a cramped space where the enemy had already taken positions, these guys had to storm in and take control, not an easy operation by any means.
Nobody needs to prove how good or brave these guys are, there record speaks for themselves.

Exactly.
And they could have blown them up by gunships or by rockets. They had to go in and offer sacrifices for those held. And it takes more than a pair to take this risk.
Plus backup in men and supply is not an issue, that the govt and forces have decided to share the burden of the massacre and bloodshed through sacrificing own life and limbs to save those held, we ought to have nothing but praise and thankfulness. otherwise they have no issues with men and equipment, the hiding rats will get what they deserve either way.

Let's be realistic instead of jingoistic, comparing records to groups like the British SAS, they sadly don't come off well :(

Actually they do. Put the SAS, Marines, or whichever elite force in comparison, the SSG will come out great in competition. Atleast in men and training if not weapons or equipment.

SSG = Commandos.
Special forces like the SAS in the UK and the Marines in the US or the Revolutionary Guards of Iran.

Comparing special forces is not possible. The success is dependent on many factors including what role they are being used for and leadership and support.
Each is unique in its own scenario.
Going by the Wiki article, the encounters with Indian army has always inflicted heavy causalities among the SSG.....but it appears that the SSG has been used incorrectly by the Pakistan army. Used in situations where conventional army forces could be better used.
However, Indian special forces for the past decade have been training in Isreal and now are carrying Isreali weapons like the Tavor rifle.

that's true....heavy casualties were against LTTE. and it is true other way round. Foreign troops have been trianed in CIJW(counter insurgency and jungle warfare) in meghalaya.
Actually, against LTTE it was para troopers or para commandos and not NSG(national security gaurds- which is also called black cat commandos).

SSG is good among the best.
Their success stories cannot be made public but of course the bothched up operations always come to limelight.
Black cats must also be good, highly trained, motivated.

oyey....i dont think they are black cats. He mentions about them doing counter insurgency operations. NSG does not have anything to do with counter insurgency.

I think the only success that SSG could claim would be in the afghan war in coordination with CIA. In 1965, the SSG was sent to control indian airstrips at the border. It was like a Bay of Pigs with older maps and ineffective coordination so that is why it ended in a blunder. I don't what [if any] operations are known about the 1971 war as that was the ideal place for SSG to operate against mukti / indian troops or sp ops?.

NSG has never done any counter insurgency operations. They haven’t been deployed in border. They have only been used during emergency situations..sort of a crack team.
