Re: What Is SSG?
Yes SSG were used in Karachi Airport when the Panam Airline was hijacked. That was not complete success either - made a mess of that.
Re: What Is SSG?
You have to remember the special forces consist only of a few thousands of members. They are supposed to used in special operations only.
The indian army is correctly using the regular indian army troops for the counter insurgency operations in kashmir and north east states. However, these units of the army are the highly trained ones.
Simarly in Iraq, most combat operations are done by regular us army troops, no need for green berets or navy seals.
Re: What Is SSG?
SSG soldiers making victory signs after the operation. This was the caption of a picture published in newspaper.
I think i have never heard even Indian Commandoes or soldiers doing this after any successful operation in Kashmir.
Re: What Is SSG?
Yeah MKF that was a very good picture in Dawn yesterday I think.
Re: What Is SSG?
Shriek,
The 1965 operations were a mess for many other reasons, the biggest being the incapacity of the higher command to understand what spacial service troops are used for. The actual blunder was the para drop behind enemy lines. It was a failure overall, but at individual level lots of tales go around of unimaginable human spirit and valour. I myself know a Lt Col whose dad was then a Maj in the SSG, he was martyred behind enemy lines and his story as narrate by one of his JCOs who managed to escape crossing the border is a classic tale of chivalry and risking through the roughest, which is not possible for an avg human, or even an avg regular troop for that matter.

did you see that or hear that in other operartions/cnflict also?.....then even i haven't:D ...NSG would not be involved in kashmir, barring specific situations i guess.
Re: What Is SSG?
Black cat. Does anyone else find humor in that name? Black Cat reminds me of Slyvester the cat from old cartoons. HERE PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY…
The only thing the Indian black pussy commandos are good at are catching rats.
Re: What Is SSG?
I did briefly talk about the 1965 fiasco but I disagree with your contention as then what is the use of “special operations” if they can’t conduct special operations??
Idealy, the PAF would have its own red berets sort of unit. What I dislike about the views of pakistanis like you is that they “rationalize” the blunder of our armed forces with the soldiers were shaheed, ghazi etc * which is why we fared even worse in 1971 and then in Siachen where we were tactically surprised by the indians!
Get out of that mentality buddy! :)*
Re: What Is SSG?
For me the best unit in the world!
I know where my future son is going.
Re: What Is SSG?
children stop comparing "danda" sizes.
Re: What Is SSG?
PAF now has its Special Service wing.
About 1965 the ‘special operations’ were launched in a hurry without proper planning. Special Operations are special by nature and they require special planning, tactic and command. The launch of paratroopers behind enemy lines in 65 lacked all these elements. The GOC in charge was a non-special ops officer with no exposure to any such action. The SSG was also new, the then commandant tried to raise his concerns but was overridden by rank. The troops were ready to go, but were they readied with the right timing, quantity, swiftness, equipment and scale? No. So how could a unit take care of the logistics on its own, they are supposed to be taken care of by the supporting elements in command. Besides many in the chain of command actually even called it a suicidal mission before the drops. Unfortunately I cant recall names at the moment but I’m summarizing what I’ve gathered from the books written by officers, Generals and below as well as other analysts. You can read up on Gul Hassan, Shaukat Riza, Mitha, S G Mehdi, Cloughley among others.
Plus the mentality you talk about, yes, even the ‘sahabas’ regarded Ghazi and Shaheed with respect and honour, regardless of how successful any mission was. Any clues how revered the Ghazi’s and Shaheeds of Uhud are? The battle was lost due to clear failings on the part of Muslim troops’ coordination, tactic and execution, but those who took part gained the respect of many a lifetime. So hats off to that mentality. Plus no failure is a failure of the entire force, thats why if the top command blunders, rational thinkers don’t discredit the junior level brilliant soldiers and officers and don’t rid them of well deserved citations. That applies to any war, any battle.*

It came about after 2001 when PAF was impressed with how quickly USAF special forces could secure areas and set up runaways in Pakistan and in afghanistan. They are still miniscule compared to the $$$ that SSG gets. It is like comparing pak marines to the army.
PS Most of the SSG were captured by the sikhs and indian troops [the commanding officer was able to command a jeep and escape with few others] so I don't know of any casualties that happen.
PS2 Isn't Gul Hassan the same guy who was a failure in East Pakistan? I am suprised why him and Tikka khan never got court martialed while niazi was made the only scapegoat for everything. I remember about reading of couple captains that fled in choppers and small boats to burma while their "jawans" were fighting in bangladesh.
Re: What Is SSG?
Gul Hassan was CGS in GHQ and not in east Pakistan i suppose.
Pakistan Army has no habit of courtmartialling its general officers.
Re: What Is SSG?

Fully agreed to Zuberi's analysis. But army is to blame in a manner that why did it not courtmartial the person who planned and executed this fiasco. In Pakistan Army in special a soldier who loses his rifle gets more punishment that the general who looses the war. Had we courtmartialled that idiot who wasted so many lives, no body could have dare accused the army as a whole but as they saved his butts so people point fingers at the institution.
Re: What Is SSG?
I remember that, at least, tikka khan got full military honors [became army chief
]. Sure we can say he “resurrected” himself due to the balochistan insurgency. After all, why can’t he when we can have field marshals who never actually won a battle or war? ![]()
