thanks

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

closest is hari hania...i dhon't think there is any urdu word for it coz we don't have parsley back home :)

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

wow, I did not know that parsley leaves are Ajwaa'in ke pattay .. (courtesy; google search)

**
i'm surprised and confused as well coz ajwain is called Oregano in English...wallah 'aalam bissawaab**

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

Ajwain is not called Oregano in English, it’s called Carom Seed, and actually it’s compared to a really strong version of Thyme in flavour.

Parsley is apparently called Ajmoda in Urdu… that’s what a quick Google search told me… :hmmm:

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

^I saw that too. What the heck is ajmoda btw.. the word sounds even more foreign than Parsley

**
i saw that but these are diffrent cultivars of the sane genus so ajwain is more like Oregano. **

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

Ok, at least Ajmoda sounds kinda Urdu-ish… but what the heck is Peter Sili? Sounds like a guy’s name.. apparently that’s an Urdu word for Parsley too… :konfused:

Also found “Ajwain Kharasani”.. :hmmm:

exactly!

Ajwain is of the Trachyspermum genus, and Oregano is of the Origanum genus..

The only thing these two have in common is that they are of the same Kingdom classification - Plantae i.e Plants! :)

Awwww man... i'm having flashbacks of Biology classes...

i chocked on my Ajmooda when I read that

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

Gosh this is confusing, but you guys are all sweethearts for helping out :)
I doubt most shopkeepers at the spices walay grocery stores in pakistan would be educated enough to know which spice is parsley flakes

I'll try asking them for ajmoda as well as, coz ajwain I think also is oregano and that I don't need

Re: what is parsley called in urdu?

Its not common in Pakistani cooking probably because this herb/spice is not native to this place (similar to thyme & rosemary which also don't have proper urdu names and not usually used in Pakistani cooking). However, try Makro or Metro store as they have large number of native / non-native spices & herbs. I'm sure you'll find it there.

Dried parsley has very little flavor--is there a reason you have to use dried instead of fresh? If fresh is acceptable, try substituting cilantro/dhania----it has a very similar flavor, and if you're just using it for a garnish or a little added flavor, it won't be significantly different than parsley.
