Re: What is haram di kamai?
Would it awesome to live in a world where no one offended anyone else? Heck yeah! However, that is not possible because in the real world people hold a vast array of different views. The problem with restricting speech is that efforts to make it happen can quickly become a tool to silence critics and oppress minorities (Paraphrasing something President Obama said over here).
Pakistan is great example of how the blasphemy law is used to oppress minorities. Here’s an article from dawn, a Pakistani English news daily, summarizing the whole issue.
Summary:
The Asia Bibi blasphemy case involves a Pakistani Christian woman, Aasiya Noreen (born c. 1971; better known as Asia Bibi), convicted of blasphemy by a Pakistani court, receiving a sentence of death by hanging in 2010. In June 2009, Noreen was involved in an argument with a group of Muslim women with whom she had been harvesting berries after the other women grew angry with her for drinking the same water as them. She was subsequently accused of insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a charge she denies, and was arrested and imprisoned. In November 2010, a Sheikhupura judge sentenced her to death. If executed, Noreen would be the first woman in Pakistan to be lawfully killed for blasphemy. [copied this straight from wikipedia]
There you go. Highlighted the important details in the summary. The above case shows how draconian laws against free speech can be abused and used to oppress minorities.
PS: The US does a lot of things wrong, free speech ain’t one of them. I probably would not have to leg to stand on if I was in Canada or Europe because those places place severe restrictions on speech. However, I’m in the US of A so free speech all day baby ![]()
