“Others imply that they know what it is like to be depressed because they have gone through a divorce, lost a job, or broken up with someone. But these experiences carry with them feelings. Depression, instead, is flat, hollow, and unendurable. It is also tiresome. People cannot abide being around you when you are depressed. They might think that they ought to, and they might even try, but you know and they know that you are tedious beyond belief: you are irritable and paranoid and humorless and lifeless and critical and demanding and no reassurance is ever enough. You're frightened, and you're frightening, and you're "not at all like yourself but will be soon," but you know you won't.”

“Depression is awful beyond words or sounds or images...it bleeds relationships through suspicion, lack of confidence and self-respect, the inability to enjoy life, to walk or talk or think normally, the exhaustion, the night terrors, the day terrors. There is nothing good to be said for it except that it gives you the experience of how it must be to be old, to be old and sick, to be dying; to be slow of mind; to be lacking in grace, polish and coordination; to be ugly; to have no belief in the possibilities of life, the pleasures of sex, the exquisiteness of music or the ability to make yourself and others laugh.”

I read somewhere that depression is like cancer and not mere sadness.
A neverending dark tunnel, which keeps getting darker.

Re: What is depression?

You need to read Dale Carnegie. Trust me, you wont need any med after that.

PS: Its available in urdu as well ;)

Re: What is depression?

Which book do you recommend ?

Re: What is depression?

Books doesn't help .

Re: What is depression?

Meds aren't a long term solution either. They only help when you're on them. Once you stop, its back to the same old depression.

I think he is talking about "how to stop worrying and start living". It's s good book indeed, but another one of my favorite is "tough times never last, but tough people do".

Re: What is depression?

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll try to get my hands on them soon.

Re: What is depression?

There is a point when books dont help, and one needs medical advice.

Re: What is depression?

Depression can take many forms, and affects people in different ways. There is no single cure, but many different treatments, including both talking therapies as well as, and often combined with, pharmacological drug treatments are used and often help most people.

Depression is one of the biggest mental health disorders that exists; not only that, but it manifests itself in other mental health disorders also, so there is a huge comorbidity. What has worked for one person (e.g. reading a book) might not necessarily work for another. The best thing is to try and seek professional help so you get a starting point on treatments. Even seeking help can be difficult for people who are clinically depressed - it's a bold move that you've identified how you're feeling, and I hope you find the right treatment for you.

Re: What is depression?

You talk about people creating obstacles for others - and when you are depressed sometimes it's difficult to judge how to react in those situations in a logical way. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you break down scenarios and help you look at things in a more rational way, so that you can take practical steps to improve your situation.

It can work very well and provide you with skills to overcome difficult situations, or you might think it's not right for you and absolutely hate it! People react very differently.

Re: What is depression?

Thank you

Re: What is depression?

why would you stop? they may have minor side effects which is better than going crazy.

Re: What is depression?

1- such drugs have long term side effects. Its never good to be on such drugs for life.
2- its heavy on the wallet.

Re: What is depression?

if you're truly depressed, you should see a psychiatrist. everyone goes through some depression here and there but if your depression is severe enough to cause loss of interest in daily activities such as your job, school, trouble focusing on things, loss of appetite, or serious thoughts of suicide then you should seek help immediately.

Re: What is depression?

Some meds aren't safe for long-term use and of course can have side-effects.. not always minor ones..

OP, seriously consider seeing a counsellor/psychologist/psychiatrist (depending on the severity of your condition)..

Re: What is depression?

And once you are on it, you're on it for life unless you go for therapy sessions along with it and they help.

Re: What is depression?

i know people taking meds for years and they are fine...you need to see your psychiatrist on a regular basis who can monitor your mental well-being. there was one medication that i know of of [Prozac] which was banned. if any drug is causing serious side effects [like the patient becomes suicidal or homicidal] the drug is taken off the market.

what alternative do we have [other than yoga shoga] to combat this menace. regular treatment is a must and it should be taken without much reservations or else the results can be horrendous.

Re: What is depression?

if someone's psychiatric problems are situation based and which can not be changed then meds are the only way...therapy can't work.
