What if God Was One of Us?

Do you remember this song of Joan Osborne’s which came out in the 90’s?

What do you think of the concepts in it?

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

God is not one of those old time kings who would roam the kingdom in disguise to get to know the problem of the people first hand.

and if God is riding the bus to get from one place to the other then is he really god?

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

But if God is everywhere, then he is also on the bus.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

One of the concepts I like in this song is the acceptance that we don't know anything for sure, and maybe we should be a little open to what if's like these.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Paving way for dajjal :)

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Really? You think so?

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

But if God is everywhere (not that we assert that notion in our beliefs anyway) then He can't be one of us, because we can't be everywhere.

Peace aurchaepiyo

Part of the conditioning required for the people to accept the Dajjal as king, prophet and then God ... is to remove the criterion of what are the boundaries of our understanding ... these songs sound like hymns to me ... that are being made for the Dajjal ... So I agree with bao bihari

And by the way ... we can be sure of what God is not ... one of us ...

One of us implies sleep ... in which case the universe would cease to exist ... Our concept is that for every infinitesimally small moment the universe exists within is actively maintained by God ... and lapse would result in non-existence for us ... think of a video tape where each frame is a 1/24th of a second ... each flick is the destruction of one static scene and it's replacement with another created in it's place with subtle change that it appears a given thing is moving ... Now extend this to the reality we have ... but 3D video across the entire universe at many thousands of billions of frames per second say for arguments sake ... each of those frames is a different universe created and destroyed as the next one comes in to play ... Now this is only an analogy, but you see how essential it is for God not to be even getting tired ....???

Now trying to entertain that God is somehow involved within the confines of this universe is even more difficult.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

we are mortals how can He be one of us. He has all power and He is the only one ......we are just ordinary human beings ....how can He be one of us ?

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

The song is about CCTV cameras. duh

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

^ ha!

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

It doesn't necessarily imply sleep. God is said to be angry or to like or dislike this or that -- we characterize things, phrase ideas -- in concepts that we can understand. If we speak English or Urdu, we don't usually phrase concepts in Yoruba or Martian: our brains don't have that capacity. Similarly, if we see the world as one of sleeping and waking, we might include that in the definition of "one of us", but we don't necessarily have to. Even your analogy here is based on the idea that no two things can exist at once...each frame, in your view, must destroy the one before.

Yet we have co-existing concepts or planes of time and space. And probably others that my puny human brain can't conceive of.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Peace again

We are told that our world is made in a deception - that deception is the cause and effect ... we see the cause and the effect, but in reality every cause and every effect are given permission of God before they happen.

This is what it means that everything is happening in accordance to the Will of God.

Now regarding the song ... one of the lyrics is "just a slob like one of us" ... and yet we believe God is unlike us ... however when we talk about metaphoric alignment we can aligned with God in that God loves His prophet and we love His prophet so there is an equating here, but notice that it is not about the NATURE of God, but something apart from Him.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Its a great song. One of my favourites. She does a great live version too.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Yet it is said that we are made in God's image -- actually so it is said in the Bible, I don't know about the Quran.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

^ god's image, no way in islam allah(swt) is nothing like human being we are small insignificant molecule less than atom compared to allah(swt)

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Why would God be one of us?

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

Great song. Brought back memories. Can you believe it's 15 years old?

And yes, we were created in the Divine's image. I'm always surprised when other Muslims are surprised at this fact. God says 'I breathed into him (Adam) of My Spirit' in Surah Al Hijr. So yes, God is inside of us, and all around us.

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

no ALLAH is not inside us........................

subhanAllah

Re: What if God Was One of Us?

"God is not in His creation nor out of His creation."
