Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
lucid
My issue is not with price, but service and quality for price. and by quality I dont mean some sort of iron chef type presentation..clean place..tameezdaar staff, proper service.
Thats why when i fiond a good place I cling to it, try paradise in hoffman estates, I also like bhabhis kitchen if you tell the eally friendly owner to just go away, he is a nice guy but dude..like enough about your damn roti.. it good, ab rehnay do..get a clue.
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
^ I agree about the service part... unfortunately, our desi folks don't really get the hospitality part of business.
I know what you mean though... I always try to look for places where I feel welcomed, not to be bothered while I'm eating, and can enjoy a decent ambiance and clean facilities . Once more though, unfortunately, the places that serve good food think that it's just the food that will bring in the crowds. Granted that food might be their core competency but they don't believe in threshold level competencies in managing their establishment - in the end, you're stuck with take-out.
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
There is this place right near to Uni and it is an Arab/Afghani eating place. The interior is so pretty and it is a small yet cosy place. They serve the most freshiest and nicest food in that whole of that city in my opinion. The owners are so friendly and welcoming as if you are long lost family and the service is polite and considerate. Food is afordable even for students:D and you often see this little ‘cafe’ full of businessmen.
The food is cooked fresh and whilst it can take a while, you know they will not have compromised on quality and dedication. No recontituted crap which is reheated (I know because they once let me in to their kitchen:cb:), even the sauces are made by themselves, which have become their trademark. On and their chips too. They add the most nicest seasoning to the chips:hayaa:
It costs abut £3-4 for a decent lunch which is remarkable considering placing on campus charge this amount for cardboard chips, baked beans as a source of lubrication for the cardboard and a drink. The cafe is better than quite a few of the more higher end restaurants and their service without a doubt (alhamdulilah) the best!
I would rather pay a bit more to ensure that the food I am eating is of a good quality. There are so many desi takeaway come diners style places, which boast cheap prices, crap service and food is the same old standard fare. I tend to stick to places like Anams (Bradford), Nawaabs(Manchester) or Lahore Karahi( London), as these are all family orientated restuarants with ok prices (buffets around £8), the atmosphere is good, srvice is of a good quality and you know you won’t get lafangay after you
My point is, if the owners of an establishment truly want their customers to have an enjoyable experience and want them to visit again they will not compromise in so many arenas. So many places do not want to compromise on profits, so they compromise by given us a bum deal in everything else:cb:

there is a area, more of a borough of Detroit called Hamtramck. That place is full of Bangladeshi people. There is a restuarant called Aladin. Pure blue collar restaurant. Food over there was not just goog but quite less expensive.
See the thing is, there no one expect service, people go there for price. They had disposable cups and a pitcher of water sitting at one corner. You eat your food, get up and go and drink water.

You tried the desi places in Ann Arbor? Seriously, they are SOO overrated. Shalimar, Rajarani, madras masala etc, the college students (who have tonnes of amazing other restaunts in AA) are soo gooo goo gaa gaa over them and the foods not even good!
This desi club and all is not uncommon in Houston. My husband was visiting his cousins and after he came back, he was like Im NEVER going back there. He said how it's so normal for teens to hang out in these desi clubs/lounges playing pool and watching girls 'performing' dances, most of the people there are either smoking or drinking or doing both. The parents basically have no control over the kids, most of them are staying out late, boys racing cars and all that. He said it's a totally different lifestyle you're going to see there and it's definitely not a good one.
it happens everywhere.. i guess Houston is the only city in the US with dance bars (which us Houstonians are not very proud of) besides that everything else you described above happens in every major city in the US.

I only prefer Panjabi owned indian (north indian) restaurant. Other than that, indian restaurants dont know what they are cooking. No insult intended.
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
We have this awesome punjabi restaurant here.. all vegeterian though, but they have the yummiest karhi, cholay, sarson ka saag makki ki roti, parathay, very authentic and home cooked flavor...the only problem is that one serving isn't enough for even one person. Taste is outstanding but wickedly small portions and high prices. But clean and neat decor, great service, nice bathroom that has diffusers inside and sparkling floors.
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
I think problem is, most of indian resturants are owned by South Indians or Gujratis... and they just dont know how to cook north indian food and when they try, they kill that to death.
On the flip side, Paki restaurants should avoid South indian food. There was a restaurant in Karachi near National stadium that started making Dosa. That thing was no where near Dosa that Southies eat. It was a Paratha, made out of fermented dough, served as a wrap with some fillings inside it.
