Ok this is a little different but on the same lines. We were lost in Chicago once, and caught up in some traffic trying to figure out how to get to lakeshore, and this desi driver kept honking behind us. My friend who was driving didnt care, so the driver snuck past us and goes ‘oye gadhey gaddi chalaana sikh’
We all laughed so hard.
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
i know there are many desi restaurants that have amazing food but their service sucks and the restaurant is very dirty. I just cant go and eat atplaces like this no matter how good the food is ![]()
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
I get pretty peeved at the prices and service levels of desi restaurants as well – especially in comparison to the other options available… but just recently I was wondering if this is typical and more of a helpless state for the types of restaurants we frequent. I mean most of us who’re writing here about our issues are talking about our experiences with establishments serving desi halal food. Firstly, the meat itself costs a lot more than wholesale meat used by other restaurants including Italian/Greek/whatever. Also, I’m pretty sure that the desi halal food restaurants don’t do as much business as their American/Italian/Greek counterparts because the food still primarily appeals to desis or it’s an acquired taste for most gorey pallets – the exception being butter chicken which is what most gorey think of when they hear Indian cuisine.
So on the supply side, the food costs more to make… and on the demand side, there just isn’t enough of demand… both these factors reduce any opportunities for economies of scale and the consumer is charged for roti chawal whatever. It’s volume vs. price debacle… our desi restaurants make money off every order/transaction, while their counterparts make money off the volume of business.
Just my own rather unqualified take on this issue – I don’t own/run a joint or anything.
I used to think it is halal too. Then I saw this and stopped eating there. I did not find anything against McDonald fish fillet so I eat it.
FF at any place are halal or not will depend on if it has animal shortening as one of the ingredients or not. Then is it animal a halal animal or zabiha animal etc. But at all the places the fryer for FF is always separate because they do not want FF to get cross contaminated with other food smells .
The BK Everywhere has the same setup for cooking , frying , grilling and roasting.
Thanks Mirch bhai.
FF? French Fries or Fish Fillet
BK?
I heard bun they use for fish Fillet in Mc Donald is haram.
I asked for shotening fro french fries in Mc Donald they said use vegetable shortening.
I also heard that they send all their shortening to some place and they do something to make it reuseable. They also mix all shortening togather and send for something and that makes it reuseable. Is it correct or not?

There is too much details about all these things. At the end of the day , you have to do your own research and then decide on your own.
What I knew for sure about Buger King(BK) fish burger I shared.
I know a lot about McDonalds buns , FF etc but I cannot give my opinion for you to follow, as some will agree and others will disagree. All that information is readily available on internet for you to read and decide.
One thing I know about the shortening recycling , it is not used for frying stuff after it is recycled. It is used for various other purposes like it is mixed with fuels , used as lubricant etc

- inconsistency of taste - one day you'll eat nihari to die for - the next day you'll feel like they just took the boti from one dish and the shorba form another and put it in front of your face
Some of the resturants in NJ are even better the ones in NY. The best are the buffets. Ample seating. Family friendly. Everything including Naan, drinks, mitha, paan is included in $15. And they will have specials (Mutton Joints, Lamb) in addition to the usual "halwa puri, biyani, nihari, haleem" menu
The funny one was when a friend of mine was in J/H and suddenly this guy in his car started following her at slow speed and kept saying, Hello.. oye beautiful, idhar dekho.. he kept on saying stupid stuff.. finally when he saw that she didn't even glance at him and just kept walking, he said, oye baji lift to kara do.. she looked at him so angrily and he said, dekh magar pyaar se baji. such desperate guys there, i tell you.
I was walking in Jackson heights WITH MY DAUGHTER and this guy started with the same business. I almost Thappared him - he saw my hubby from the other side and ran like hell. :)

Dude... they gotta spread their total cost over all their products. I prolly know that place you're talking about. That could be an anomaly of sorts... back in my student days, my bro and I went in there... had a glass of lassi and decided to walk out after looking at the menu prices.
In Orlando, Golden Dynasty (Hakka Chinese) was our favorite joint. In the four days that I was there, I ate three meals there.

Hmm, well seeing the other things that are being discussed in this thread, american desi joints are not being painted in a nice light, so i thought this was another example… you guys have it bad over the pond.
TBH, it’s as bad here in the UK. Rarely do you find a nice desi restaurent. just to touch on X2’s point of mujras etc.: My sister in law lives in Derby UK, she says there is a desi strip club/bar/restaurant there…
Call me backward but this is too much for me.
Back to topic.
Most desi restaurents i have been to are either really old fashioned (old decor, cheesy indian music) or ultra modern serving minute portions, then charging an arm and leg for it.
And the whole ‘naan for free’ thing: with desis you never get something for nothing unfortunately.
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
Wow, this desi strip club stuff is just too crazy for me to digest ..
Re: What I seriously hate about US based Desi restaurants
This desi club and all is not uncommon in Houston. My husband was visiting his cousins and after he came back, he was like Im NEVER going back there. He said how it's so normal for teens to hang out in these desi clubs/lounges playing pool and watching girls 'performing' dances, most of the people there are either smoking or drinking or doing both. The parents basically have no control over the kids, most of them are staying out late, boys racing cars and all that. He said it's a totally different lifestyle you're going to see there and it's definitely not a good one.
