Re: WHAT HAPPENED IN 1971?
In Short, We had a militaty dictator ( just like we have today) oppotunists were with him showing that nothing is wrong in the country, and anyone who is pointing out the problems is nothing but the JAHILS. Same as today, some groups are claiming that MUSH is the best thing happend to the country... if he is the best then what is worst?.
These groups also made the dictator ( Ayoub khan and Yehya Khan) believe that it is them who had kept the country intact and their role is vital in the integrity of the country... Same like when Mushy says that his role is inevitable for the country and if he goes the country will be in a mess ( i wonder, what more damage can he do, by any aspect, Pakistan is in mess... i think he meant that the country have little ray of hope, and it is neccessary that he stays so the little ray of hope is also faded)
The Pakistani Army was deployed in East Pakistan, when peace could have been achieved through political dialogue... ( same as the great mush has deployed army in northern areas, tribal areas and Balochistan)
People were getting killed and/or disappeared and Gen. Yehya Khan was busy in drinking and parties ( just like Gen. Mushy, dancing on the event of 12 May 07 and later on doing mujra in mehfils)
The Situation was somewhat same, our arch rival took advantage over weak leadership and fueled the anarchy in the country... in result... Pakistan was torn....
Party Overall % of votes Total seats
Awami League 38.3% 160
Pakistan Peoples Party 19.5% 81
PML (Qayyum) 4.5% 9
Party ** Punjab ** Sind ** NWFP ** Balochistan West Pakistan East Pakistan **
AL **0 (0.07%) 0 (0.07%) ** 0 (0.2%) 0 ** (1.0%) 0 160 (74.9%) **
PPP **62(41.6%) 18(44.9%) ** 1(14.2%) 0 ** (2.3%) 81 ** 0 **
PML *1(5.4%) * 1(10.7%) ** 7(22.6%) 0 ** (10.9%) 9 *0(1.0%) *
The vote was clearly divided between two wings, and Awami league won twice as much as seats than PPP in west Pakistan but their mendate was denied since they had no representation in West Pakistan. Same was with PPP, they were winners here but had no representation in East Pakistan. Instead of opening a dialogue for a powershare between major parties, a milatary solution was adopted, and there it all went wrong.
There are few misconceptions about Polish resolution as well. Although Polish resolution talked about transfering power to the MAJORITY (Awami League) but it also talked about moving trops and civilians according to their ethnicity, which of course wasn't a viable solution. The only viable solution at that stage was to forrm a FEDERATION, but it was too late.
East pakistan became Bangladesh.

You know what would be interesting?
If we call Bangladesh PM and tell her that we were wrong and were not looking at the numbers. You guys clearly won, so how about that we rejoin the two countries, and you take the charge.

on the contrary, we were looking at the numbers but from a different perspective. The real issue wasn't total numbr of votes or seats won; the real issue was absence of representative party vote bank in BOTH wings.
AL had NO REPRESENTATION in west Pakistan and similarly PPP had nothing in East Pakistan. These figures are AUTHENTIC figures from Pakistan Election Commission's website.
The other factor was population and electrol distribution. Both wings had almost equal population BUT ratio of electrol seats was not realistic, which was a major concern for PPP since although they secured almost same votes but they ended up with just 81 seats. AL didn't recognize that fact and insisted that since they are in majority they should be allowed to run country.
Re: WHAT HAPPENED IN 1971?
Hello all!
Looking at what happened to Pakistan in 1971 brought home the fact that just a dominant religious homegenty is insufficient to form a country. The reason Awami League won so dominantly in East and PPP in the West is due to the difference in ethnicity, language, culture etc. On top of that when the people were denied the power to rule according to their mandate, that was it.

I think you make a very valid point here :) Ethnicity, jealousy and favouritism are very much part of desi politics (and that incl. India as well)
Re: WHAT HAPPENED IN 1971?
Bengalis felt discriminated economically and politically, despite them being at the forefront of Pakistani movement.
Elections would have made Sheikh Mujib as PM but Bhutto and West Pakistani establishment would not accept a Bengali as leader
India started messing and supported Mukti Bahini. Pak Army responded and human rights violations were happening all over the place.
Yahya Khan and Bhutto's brilliant mind thought that instead of giving Bengalis their rights, we should attack India for its interference.
Without local support and thanks to India's opportunism, we had to surrender and Bangladesh was formed.
But it is not like Mujeeb would have been the first Bengali PM of Pakistan. Bhutto and the army should have respected the peoples’ verdict
Khawaja Nazimuddin (2nd Governor General, later second PM of Pakistan)

Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (5th PM of Pakistan)

Re: WHAT HAPPENED IN 1971?
^ Mohammad Ali Bogra was also a Bengali, and the Pakistani PM for a couple of years in the early to mid 50s.
^ Yup very true. So there you go. Despite all the fuss cooked up by Bhutto and the army in 1971 Pakistan had no less than three Bengali Prime Ministers before Mujeeb.
Muhammad Ali Bogra (3rd PM of Pakistan)

Re: WHAT HAPPENED IN 1971?
But if you study the politics of that era, most of the Bengali PMs we mentioned were from the Muslim League bandwagon, and hence `5-20 or so years down the road, Mujib emerged as a new politician stepping up from student leadership and had gained popularity on the notion of his stance against indiscrimination.
True but Awami League was actually founded by Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy
Suhrawardy is considered to be the first populist leader in Pakistan’s history. He is the founder of the Awami League, one of the two major political parties of present day Bangladesh.

No thank you, we are better off without each other. Just good relations is more then enough.

You pretty much nailed it... unless we are ready to accept the outcome there is no point of doing democracy drama.
