I want to make fish curry and fillets just won’t work for that so I wanted something that has fewer bones.
Hubby wants to eat fish but he doesn’t want it to smell like it.
i make salan with snapper with bones. it tastes awesome. I don’t like like salan with boneless fish like talapia etc. use shaan fish 1 tbsp to make bangali salan. umm
I think Salmon has a very strong smell and flavour.
Steak cut pieces are best for curries/ Salan as the bone keeps the fish together. But I really hate bones as i think i got one stuck in my throat years ago so i have this fear of hem. I have made curry with fillet pieces of cod and haddock before, just make sure you have nice thick pieces and don’t turn it too much.
As for the smell of the fish, if you marinate it in garlic for a few hours then it doesn’t smell, we never fry/cook fish without putting garlic on it first.
You know what would be great? a comprehensive guide or list that tells you which fish is best for certain cooking methods, like what’s the best fish for batter/deep frying, desi style, baking, grilling, salans, etc.
salmon is a favourite for me and my daughter…we just like it grilled and then have it with dill, sour cream and pickled onions (okay she doesn’t like the onions, only I do)
unfortunately it’s not a good fish for curry.
I think I recall Papa using Snapper for curry. I’m going to try that.
I’ve never seen Cod or Haddock in any format other than fillet. Will have to go hunting for that.
Sara…that’s a great idea…maybe I’ll update the first post with info that people contribute in this thread. Tried and true recipes/advise only please!
One of my favorite seafood dishes is panko crusted salmon and vegetables–recipe courtesy of Khattichic. And then using leftover salmon and making tikkis out of them.
