Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
IMO, two factors lead teenagers to smoking; parental neglect and peer pressure.
Parents who do not educate their children about the bad (does not necessarily have to be specific -smoking) just generally they have to bring their kids up to ignore the bad in society.
Also, the pressure from the environment that's a no brainer.
How they get access? friends, friends of friends..etc
and how the ratio I don't know, all depends on the desi population.
Bright future? The ones I have seen 90% have no future at all.
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
peer pressure in what sense? and why parents neglect them?
and if they get access to these illicit stuff where they get the money from?
ps. sad to hear about the ratio :( cp tum acha perhana
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
^ Peer pressure matlab they see their friends smokin' or people of the same age groupas them smokin' then they will have to also; to either fit in or just the thrill factor does it for some.
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
cricket is right #1 is peer pressure which encourages a person to go for it and #2 parenatal neglect , but it also varies person to person .........
zobia i only knew about smoking habits among pakistani teenagers haven't seen or heard of anyone taking drugs or booz , but what i know is rahabilitation programs for such illicit activities r not promoted the way they're in western countried hence future must not be good for such teenegers.
as for smokers , parents should brought up their kids in a way that they could differentiate b/w right or wrong doings , and b/w what's healthy , what's not........... also if fathers/ uncles r smokers they should refrain from doing that in front of kids , or should quit so that seeing them smoking won't put bad impacts on youngsters

see this guyz
it was advertised as a healthy statement back when it was first introduced
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
Does smoking = bad morals?
In that case, all fat people are bad people as well.

does not necessarily mean the people are bad, they have decided to take an action which was bad. same thing for fat people, they decided to live an unhealthy lifestyle, don't mean they are bad people.
zobia, every 14 year old has a job nowadays, doesn't matter if they washing dishes, sweeping floors, still a job. and once they get hooked to these drugs and the attention they get, they cannot stop it.
also that "allowance" that parents give out, they shouldn't IMO. I never received allowance and i was still able to "fit in". and live a healthy lifestyle on top of that. that's the way it should be.

For experimentation I have tried drugs when I was growing up but will stick to the subject of drinking and smoking.
Alcohol started as a taboo, that was the whole point to try it just to see why it is not allowed. Liked it and kept the habbit to the day, but I have made some rules for my self to make sure I don't go overboard.
Smoking for me started as a time killer, when I was in my teens I had friends who were smokers but the thing never appealled me, so I never picked up the habbit. when I started working (and my work takes me to the most weirdest/isolated places on the earth) I started smoking just to kill time at the age of 24. But realised after 10 years if I do not quit sooner its going to kill me, so I am a smoker no more. Still I go for sheesha once in a while but habitul smoking is out.
IMO, two factors lead teenagers to smoking; parental neglect and peer pressure.
I would say that would depend on case to case, in my situation neither of the reasons given by you triggered the habbit.

Dude I started drinking when I was 16 years, and I am very successfull in my profession and same goes to all my drinking buddies from Pakistani origins. Our motto was and is work hard in Studies/jobs/bussiness and play even harder.

This is very similar to the responses I get about my drinking hobby. For some reason people think that social drinkers are irresponsible, immoral, untrustworthy and dysfunctional. What a joke. I say its just bad education they are getting offline.

And who is going to set the standard whats good or bad? You? Why not me?
And who is going to set the standard whats good or bad? You? Why not me?
its the society ....... if u dont think religion has right to set standards ......
n well ... if u dont even care abt society ..........
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
very nice topic..i will share my comments :)
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
Personally I m not and was into any Drugs / Drinking / Smocking situation . . . even though my father used to smoke a lot. The thing is that such habits have always been condemned in our house. Initially a certain fear of elders, refrained me and then it was all about understanding that these are not good habits . . .
Islam is a code of life . . . as a Muslim society we need to tell / teach our teenagers about good and evil according to Islam (Saza & Jaza) such teaching will be a helping factor in refraining them from such habits . . .
Seeing one Drinker leading a successful life does not mean that the same condition would apply to any other person . . . the majority will fall on dark side . . .
Belief / Faith is the core factor of Islam . . . Doing a sin believing that this is not a sin is a greater Sin. I could never think that if I can manage to limit myself to a certain level in drinking or any thing else forbidden in Islam is OK for me. There are no in betweens in Islam. It’s YES or NO . . .
It’s my thinking only . . . I do not want to hurt anybody here . . .
Khush Raho :)

Rite, I dont care what religion have to say.
But I like your confidence in society which don't say anything on matters like karo kari.
I do not think its peer pressure, society or parents neglact. Its just personal choice.
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
well--i dnt think its anything to do with parents..parents never want their children to do bad stuff.....
it depends ...everyone got almost a different reason for smoking or taking drugs..
quite a few years ago i started smoking.... but it hasnt got anything to do with family...i had some personal probs gng in my life....
so yea it all depends how u tke it

Would you like to see your children adopting your drinking habit?
and how do they get access to illicit drugs, alcohol?
It's very easy to access drugs and alcohol. It's a business and people will sell to those who buy. The government is also involved in this illicit trade.

[/QUOTE]
Not sure about the exact numbers, but a lot of desis in my college were involved in drinking and doing drugs, but the Muslims who did such things kept in under wraps, so they wouldn't be judged by the other Muslims, some of whom were also involved in drinking and drug use. Desi secrecy and hypocracy at its finest.

Sure they do. The majority of the people in this world do or have done drugs.
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
Some people think it's cool and some might do it to fit in with their friends.
Re: what factors leads the teenagers to smoke?
peer pressure for sure.
