? I hear it a lot when I go to pakistan. No one in my family uses it or people that I know personally, but mostly men on the streets and busses or shops, and gupshup ofcourse…is it supposed to be like ‘bro.’?

the reason its sometimes frowned upon especially in the older generation is that yaar in addition to generally connoting friend, sometimes is a polite word for friend in the.. well.. sense that people were friends in ancient greece. think socrates and the boys he was 'friends' with.

the literal meaning of yaar is a friend/buddy. All the guys in my family use it when they are talking to their friends but i guess its just not polite for girls to use it with their girlfriends.
