Re: What does religion mean to you?
lol.....you need to study Sigmund Freud and Edward Bernays if you think Religion is a manipulative way to control people.
Why dont you help me and summarize their impact on religion/people?
Not sure how good your comprehension skills are.. but when I say religion manipulates people.. it doesnt mean that religion is the only thing that does it.. so saying that "What? religion does? go read about this other theory/concept/person which manipulates people" is illogical and doesn't take anything away from the notion that religion manipulates people.

Nice question ....
Think of a deep hole in the ground ... imagine there are children at the bottom and they can't come out ... then someone drops a rope down to them that they can climb to get out. This rope is called a "life line" - and verily Islam for me is none other than the "rope of Allah" that if I hold tight to it - (the life line is how this rope offers "life" in the Hereafter), then I will be out ... Although I can climb this rope I will never be able to get out by climbing because the hole is too deep ... However, as long as I hold tight ... it means later when the rope is taken out (which is The Day of Judgement) all those who are holding the rope will be taken out of the hole with the rope (Mercy of God) ...
So to me religion is a "life line" and in the capacity of a "Mercy" if I didn't have it I would never be able to come out of the hole that I am in. This worldy existence is that hole and I see some children are playing on the floor of that hole who look up to the rope and see it going upwards without ending and who fear the effort to climb it resorting to leaving it and continue playing their games in the hole ...
Some children try to come out of the hole without using the rope and slip back down (such is the case of those who choose a religion other than what is true, or who say they have earned their virtues or those who do not attribute their success to God) ... some children think they can come out of the hole by digging downwards or by cutting the rope so other children who are not playing with them can play with them. (Those children do not know that they dig their own graves - setting themselves up for the Torment) ... for if you dig too deep the ground becomes hot and then like fire.
Religion is the EXIT sign that is lit with a green light in a deathly smoke filled room ... Religion is to Pass Go and Collect £200 Religion is the ring that stops me drowning Religion is to phone a friend, ask the audience or take a 50:50 Religion is a Counselling Service
A LIFE LINE
What a horribly pessimistic and negative approach to life. This is an awesome life.. not some terrible hole or smoke filled room. This is an awesome planet. Live life.

:D So you had nothing constructive to add to the topic in hand?
Sharaabee: Theory X is manipulative.
Hareem: What? Theory X is bad?. You should go read about Theory Y.
No mattter how manipulative Theory Y is.. it has nothing to do with the fact that Theory X is manipulative.

Just because you find it manipulative doesn't mean that it is manipulative. God has given you brains * so work it out why He has prohibited some things for people.*

Glad you agree that bringing up Theory Y has noeffect on Theory X since they are not related.
My brain tells me "He" does not exist. Nothing is prohibited. The concept of "He" was more important in barbaric times when social morality was astonishingly low. Scare people into being good. Whatever works. But in today's society of a common developed social morality we don't and shouldn't need to be scared into being good. Hence today the concept of "He" (or she, or them) is not required. Not for educated developed societies at least.*

hmmm....funny you call the past "barbaric" when today human race has developed the most destructive weapons ever and still proliferating. Also you're challenging the concept of reward and punishment, if you're idea of people have developed the social morals and they have become totally aware of right and wrong, is correct then there shouldn't be exist any prisons/laws.
Re: What does religion mean to you?
My beliefs and my way of life.
Re: What does religion mean to you?
Islam is my purpose for this world and in the here after because it makes complete sense to me. Because of my religion, I am aware of my purpose as a person, my roles wife/daughter/mother/a woman.
When I am connected to God, I am at complete peace

Aside from you not believing in God, what part of Islam can you really disagree with (without just looking for reasons) everything Islam forbids you from is for your own good

The life you live will end ... the life I live for will not !!!
My stance is not pessimistic ... it is real ... your view is myopic according to me - like I said earlier ... some children want to play games or dig holes in the ground.
Yes this life is nice - but don't get too used to it ... Just take what you need, do your bit and leave a legacy of goodness, thank God and that is what it means to hold that rope ... Holding the r*ope* is hope
Peace

Good point about the weapons. Ideally we'd be living in a war free world. But this doesn't change the fact that modern society has morality embedded in it. A lot of the "10 commandments" example are nothing but common sense today. This doesn't mean that there will be NO CRIME. The prison/laws example is hence invalid.
There are alwyas going to be idiots who bend the rules. The answer still shouldn't be manipulating people with lies and scaring them into being good.

I disagree. There is a LOT of stuff in Islam that makes no sense to me. I mention Islam because you did. Other religions are no better. Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism all have their own sets of lies and deceptive stories trying to manipulate society.

You have absolutely no proof of your life not ending. It's nothing but fiction and delusion IMO. You are sacrificing stuff in this life.. living this life like it's a hole or a smoke filled room (like you mentioned).. totally negative.. in hope of getting to this imaginary awesome place that a book talks about.. but there is no evidence of.
Peace.

A peaceful but immense passion of love for Allah (swt), HIS orders and the ways of HIS prophet (saw).

It can be proved scientifically that you have a brain influenced by too much alcohol, but what scientific evidence do you have that you also have a 'mind' ? (Prove it to me scientifically)
Tell me about your soul and prove it scientifically.
Prove it scientifically how a parent (even unwillingly) develops immense love for his/her child

Re: What does religion mean to you?
I didn't think this thread was about debating religion.
Re: What does religion mean to you?

True, totally applicable to the following comment on religion:
Religion in today's globalized multicultural word is a negative force IMO. With the amount of natural ethics we have today society, the ethical part of religion is useless (not the case 3000 yrs ago). With the amount of Science we have, religion is a distraction and leads to high levels of ignorance amongst the masses.
It's a waste of time.
IMO.
