What does religion mean to you?

Salam

I’d like to hear your perception of religion, whatever religion you follow(Islam, Christinaity, Hinduism, Budhism etc..).

I’d like to know what it means to you, not in terms of its importance but rather along the lines of ‘what do you think it is for?’

p.s: I just wish to read different people’s views and would appreciate if it doesn’t turn into a debate. :slight_smile:

i think for me my religion is my code of life, my code of conduct.

Religion in today's globalized multicultural word is a negative force IMO. With the amount of natural ethics we have today society, the ethical part of religion is useless (not the case 3000 yrs ago). With the amount of Science we have, religion is a distraction and leads to high levels of ignorance amongst the masses.

It's a waste of time.

it's a beautiful life.. this is an awesome planet.. we are living in amazing times with awesome technology and knowledge... enjoy life.. live to the fullest.. be good to everyone..

instead of sacrificing and submitting to fiction in the blind hope of something after death.. for which there is no scientific evidence.

I disagree. The thread is about what we feel about religion. Agnostics and Atheists duly belong in this category of people who have opinions on Religion.

FYI I am not an extremist Atheist.

^ Why do you think non-believers shouldnt have a say in religion? Religion today affects all our lives.. regardless of how religious we are.

A way to organize people. A way to control them. (I'm not saying this as an atheist, btw.)

Interesting views, thanks for the replies..

I am in the process of forming an opinion and different perceptions come to mind..

The first thing that comes to my mind is that it is something that tames the animal instinct in me.

Then something that is supposed to help people coexist. Ironically, we do see otherwise. I don't blame religion(any religon) for it though, just the lack of understanding and misuse of it.

Then something that gives me escape or better said a strength, something to fall back on.

and then there are random thoughts that I can't put into words... btw ^ is more of like loud thinking. It's not definitive and no one has to agree.

lol.....you need to study Sigmund Freud and Edward Bernays if you think Religion is a manipulative way to control people.

Nice question ....

Think of a deep hole in the ground ... imagine there are children at the bottom and they can't come out ... then someone drops a rope down to them that they can climb to get out. This rope is called a "life line" - and verily Islam for me is none other than the "rope of Allah" that if I hold tight to it - (the life line is how this rope offers "life" in the Hereafter), then I will be out ... Although I can climb this rope I will never be able to get out by climbing because the hole is too deep ... However, as long as I hold tight ... it means later when the rope is taken out (which is The Day of Judgement) all those who are holding the rope will be taken out of the hole with the rope (Mercy of God) ...

So to me religion is a "life line" and in the capacity of a "Mercy" if I didn't have it I would never be able to come out of the hole that I am in. This worldy existence is that hole and I see some children are playing on the floor of that hole who look up to the rope and see it going upwards without ending and who fear the effort to climb it resorting to leaving it and continue playing their games in the hole ...

Some children try to come out of the hole without using the rope and slip back down (such is the case of those who choose a religion other than what is true, or who say they have earned their virtues or those who do not attribute their success to God) ... some children think they can come out of the hole by digging downwards or by cutting the rope so other children who are not playing with them can play with them. (Those children do not know that they dig their own graves - setting themselves up for the Torment) ... for if you dig too deep the ground becomes hot and then like fire.

Religion is the EXIT sign that is lit with a green light in a deathly smoke filled room ...

for me , religion is a way of life, the quran is a guidebook in how to nurture the best of yourself, religion is something that personally helps to make sense of things and gives support mentally and emotionally.
