What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

But war on terror is not against TTP, only Taliban to an extent and ALQ.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Ehsan Bhai,

The Americans will take the dead body and carry out all sorts of forensic tests to confirm it is Osama Bin Laden and not one of his many doubles.

If it is Osama then the US will reduce its presence in Afghanistan and correspondingly in Pakistan.

However, if it isn't Osama but is a "Double" then the USA will "keep quiet" and keep hunting for Osama but then they will not reduce their presence in Pakistan or Afghanistan.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

where does this lead the war on terror to? like its thought that alqaeda is based in the fata but almost all the high ranking people have been arrested from big cities, what will american policy regarding Pakistan be, and why would they trust pakistan intelligence and army?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/pakistan-stresses-that-raid-was-a-us-mission/2011/05/02/AFd0eeXF_story.html?hpid=z3

ISLAMABAD — Osama bin Laden was killed in a Pakistani city known for its military bases — but the Pakistani government stressed on Monday that U.S. forces carried out the mission, not Pakistani soldiers.

President Asif Ali Zardari learned of bin Laden’s death in a phone call from President Obama, a government statement said. The mission was carried out “in accordance with declared U.S. policy that Osama bin Laden will be eliminated in a direct action by the U.S. forces, wherever found in the world.”

The statement by Pakistan’s foreign ministry pointedly did not cite any Pakistani involvement in the operation, even though President Obama, in an **announcement from the White House](http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/obama-announced-osama-bin-laden-is-dead-unedited-announcement/2011/05/02/AFqAP4VF_video.html?hpid=z2), cited Pakistani assistance.**

**The omission fueled speculation about Pakistan’s knowledge of bin Laden’s whereabouts, and appeared to reflect concern within the government here about a possible backlash from Islamist insurgents or Pakistan’s strongly anti-American public. **

Depending on the role Pakistan played in identifying bin Laden’s location, the killing could ease tensions between U.S. and Pakistani military and intelligence officials, who have sparred recently over America’s presence in Pakistan, CIA drone strikes, Pakistani reluctance to strike terror hubs and U.S. assertions that Pakistani intelligence operatives protect or assist Islamist insurgents.

But **the killing could also intensify suspicions in Washington that Pakistan is either uncommitted to the U.S.-backed fight against Islamist militancy or is playing a double game by sheltering terrorists. **

Pakistan had long maintained that bin Laden and other wanted terrorists were not hiding on Pakistani soil. But bin Laden has now joined a list of high-value terror suspects captured or killed in populous mainland Pakistan, far from the wild borderlands where U.S. officials say the Taliban and al-Qaeda are based.

American troops in four helicopters swept into Abbottabad — a city 65 miles from the capital that is home to two Pakistani army regiments — early Monday morning in Pakistan (late Sunday afternoon in Washington). Bin Laden and four associates were killed inside a sprawling and heavily fortified mansion within walking distance from a premiere military academy.

In its statement, released hours later, Pakistan’s foreign ministry hailed the killing as “a major setback to terrorist organizations around the world.”

Earlier, Pakistani intelligence officials, speaking anonymously, had said bin Laden was killed in a joint operation. One official called the mission “primarily ISI,” a reference to Pakistan’s top spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence directorate.

But senior U.S. officials said no other government was informed of the raid ahead of time — including Pakistan’s.

“It is a bit embarrassing, that even if he was hiding there, [the Pakistani army] would not know,” said Rahimullah Yusufzai, a Pakistani journalist who is an expert on militancy in the country’s northwest. “It means your intelligence is not good.”

A Pakistani intelligence official said bin Laden’s high-walled refuge not far from Islamabad had escaped the agency’s notice. “If we knew that he was hanging out there, we would have caught him earlier.”

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Reminds of a story. There was a cruel landlord in a village who was a menace for the whole village throughout his life. When he was at the deathbed, he called the villagers and said his last wish is that his body be hanged on the tree. When he died villagers despite their hatred for him thought, well he is dead, we are finally free and no harm in honouring his last wish. So they hung his dead body on a tree. In few hours police came and arrested all the men on charge of hanging landlord to death. Villagers realised that even in his death landlord manged to create trouble for them.

For Pakistan OBL is like the landlord, who both in life and death continues to make lives of Pakistanies a hell.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

While there may be some rogue elements (which surely need to be taken care of) within the intelligence services siding with some radical groups, let’s not forget that it could not have been possible without the many sacrifices of our brave soldiers. Around 30,000 civilians and 6,000 soldiers have already laid down their lives for our country in this war. So always keep that sacrifice in mind before (blindly) blaming the whole intelligence and military apparatus in Pakistan

“Only a week ago, the chief of Pakistan’s Army Staff, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, told graduating cadets in the city of Abbottabad that the “back of terrorism” in Pakistan had been broken, thanks to the sacrifices of Pakistan’s soldiers.”

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

how could you say that. Osama was not even an active figure in the current scheme of terrorism. You think it was Osama who was training 13-14 years old suicide bomber?
War on terror is far from over. In fact=, this might be just a real beginning.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

That is my point. That Pakistani intelligence/military/government knew about the whereabouts of OBL all along. They just did not know about the timing of the operation

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Do you believe US drone attacks are against those 'trainers'/'planners'?

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Who can trust them ?
Can we ?

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

guys do u think they would think abt getting their troops out of Afghanistan or they will keep on creating more drama?? :( ... i dunt care wht happens to Afghanistan!! let all those mullahs go bck to Aghanistan ... i want my country back, we have had enough!!! 35 thousand pakistanis hav been killed in this so called war!

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Focus is successfully being shifted on Pakistan, but then who to complain where our own people/govt/military are confused.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Osama's death means start of a new war in Pakistan. More U.S involvement in Pakistan not just with Diplomats and Secret Agents, but with possible Troops and bases.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

^ agreed and full fledged military intervention can destabilize Pakistan and cause mutiny in the army, I dont understand why they had given shelter to a person like OBL in a big city like abbot abad

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

What we faced since 2001 was just a trailer. The real movie begins now. I don't expect these American pigs to invade Pakistan because you need very big balls for that but our PR will definitely go down. America will threaten us, more Raymond Davis's will pop up in Pakistan and of course more terrorist attacks, heck even Abbottabad or Quetta might face drone attacks.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Yes.
With such an inept govt. / ruling party and opposition or the so called elilte, where outsiders violate Pakistan's sovereignty in a convenient manner, it is virtually impossible to expect this "drama" to have any good impact on Pakistan. However, we should never loose hope. If these idiots (US) leave Afghanistan then yes at least Pakistan can then say we are fighting the militant Taliban and Al-Qaeda on their own (which they will have to any way to keep peace in the country).
A ways away though still.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

Remember Ayoub which joined SETO and SENTO .
And than Sardulmunafqeen Abdullah Abn e Ubbe Ka haqiqi waris Zia .
If some was left,Mush completed that.

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

i guess you are right ... its bitter truth!! but thts wht it seems like !! ... def they dont have the guts to do the same in Pakistan ... we have got strong defence!! but like you said there will be more frequent drone attacks!! and more suicide attacks across Pakistan!!

Re: What does death of OBL means for Pakistan?

The news is quite depressing and unblievable. It is like a bomb shell hit on the heads of Pakistanis. I left Pakistan many years ago, any bad news heart me hard as I am still living in Pakistan. At present it is quite scary and uncertain moment. Kyani, Gilani and Zardari should come in to picture immediately and tell the truth and take Pakistani public into confidence. It reminds me of scary and sad moments of 1971 when Pakistan broke in to two.
