Re: What Do You Know About…

Mausoleum of Emperor Jehangir

It lies 05 kilometers northwest of Lahore across the River Ravi. The mausoleum has a majestic structure made of red sandstone and marble. A perfect settling with a typical Mughal Garden, speaks volumes about its design and architecture. Queen Noor Jehan and the Emperor’s son, Shah Jehan built the tomb around 1637. In a courtyard next to Jehangir’s tomb lies buried his brother in law, Asif Jah, father of Queen arjumand Bano.

One of my favourite bridges in Pakistan is found between the Southern Cities of Rohri and Sukhurr.

Heres a picture of the Bridge that has existed since 1889.

Noor Jehan’s Tomb

The Empress Nor Jehan, “Light of the World” was the only Empress whose name appeared on the coins of the Mughal Empire. She was buried in 1645 at Shahdara, near Jehangir’s Mausoleum.

Badshahi Mosque

The mosque was built by Emperor Aurangzeb, the last of the great Mughals, in 1674. It has last of the greatway, measuring 21.33 meters in length and is built entirely of red sandstone. The courtyard measures 161.5m X 160.0m, the largest mosque courtyard in the world for outdoor prayers. The marble domes cover seven prayer chambers. Four minarets stand at the four corners of the mosque, each with an outer circumference of 20 meters.

I love the Badshahi Masjid which for centuries was the grandest Masjid on earth and it's courtyard is still unmatched to this day. I guess it is the best of Auranzebs achievments though that Emperor was well known for his blunders, you cannot doubt his building project was truly awe inspiring.

Re: What Do You Know About...

In the Mughal days, the old city was surrounded by a 9-meter high brick wall. A circular road around the rampart gave access to the city through 13 gates. Some of these gates are still preserved. In the bazaars (Mochi Gate, rang-mahal) of the old city, one still comes acroos tiny shops where craftsmen can be seen busy turning out masterpieces in copper, brass, silver, as well as textiles in traditional fashion.

Anarkali

Anarkali bazaar is the most fascinating of the city’s many bazaars. The alleys and lanes of Anarkali are full of exciting wares, especially traditional crafts like leather ware, embroaidered garments, glass bangles, beaten gold and silver jewellery, etc.
