what are your thoughts?

How would you think if ‘going to be’ hubby has history of mental illness/ depression issues?

Do people get better/ change after getting married or there is a hope?

Re: what are your thoughts?

The problem isn't the mental illness but how it is handled. In my family there was a marriage that was an utter disaster because both husband and wife pretended it didn't exist and the illness manifested in the children as well who also suffered from the lack of treatment.

Just be hundred percent certain the hubby to be is committed to taking his pills and the wife is prepared to tackle some expected setbacks.

Re: what are your thoughts?

He has never taken the professional help before.

Re: what are your thoughts?

Think long and hard especially since there is no.professional help. It is something that you have to live with all your life. Even when people take medication, it doesn't always help.

Re: what are your thoughts?

he is not always like this. He is going through some issues now a days which has triggered this. But he is extremely negative. has isolated himself. Its hard especially when you are in another country.

I am not really thinking to leave him. I am just worried about our future as a couple.

Re: what are your thoughts?

You need to not only think of your future as a couple but also about the effects it would have on children that you may have.

Re: what are your thoughts?

He is not keen to have children and he told me in start. But why are u suggesting this? He doesn't have a family history.
He belongs to a dysfunctional family. I have really attached to him since we engaged and leaving him is not really an option. When things were fine at his end (job/ carrier) he was amazing. He is caring, considerate, soft spoken and had a good sense of humour. It's just he lost his job and since then he is shattered.

Re: what are your thoughts?

yes, one can get fully functional and as long as he receives a good treatment and he takes his medication regularly on time everyday as per doctor's advice.

Re: what are your thoughts?

As you said , he isn't always like this . Its a temporary situation. Try to help him out of it and persuade him to get professional help.

Re: what are your thoughts?

You mean going to a psychatrist?

Re: what are your thoughts?

Psychotherapist would be a better option.

Re: what are your thoughts?

what is the difference?

Re: what are your thoughts?

He may not need medicines and CBT may be enough for him. Psychotherapist usually can't prescribe medicines. They do talk therapy.

Psychiatrist is for severe mental illnesses.

Re: what are your thoughts?

psychologists can help but he/she is NOT allowed to write prescriptions. for that, you have to take him to a psychiatrist. that's the ONLY difference.

btw, where are you and where is he is located?

Re: what are your thoughts?

Thanks. why is this important?

Re: what are your thoughts?

If it is due to him losing his job this is only temporary so I wouldn't worry about it. I'm asking about future children as children get affected by parents behaviour so although it isn't in his family his behaviour could be mirrored by your children. But inshallah the situation is only temporary. Anyone who loses their job gets affected so I wouldn't worry. And you have described him as a nice guy.

See how it goes when he gets a job, he will inshallah return to his normal self. Meanwhile until then, support him as much as you can by just being there for him.

Re: what are your thoughts?

zoloft,

but in seriousness, think long and hard before you tie the knots

Re: what are your thoughts?

after diagnosis, a treatment follows...and for that you need a psychiatrist to write a prescription and to monitor progress.

Cipralex may be a good starter...only a psychiatrist can finally decide. he will probably start with 10 mg then raising the dosage to 20 mg per day.

he must consider the side effects of those meds. first and foremost in a man is the sexual dysfunction.

Re: what are your thoughts?

Why are we talking about medicines here. It seems his current situation is related to job loss. People react differently when they lose their job. For some it is a sense of identity.

Re: what are your thoughts?

And yes. Why is the exact location of the two important. That would be unnecessary prying
