Re: What are you reading?
Khalistan seems to be more popular among Pakistan nowadays than India (watched a few youtube videos)
It is as absurd concept as independent Kashmir.
Religion by its definition is sociological and political process, since Gurudwaras have huge donation and hence monetary endowment as well, the membership entails huge amount of tax free money and has inherent corruption.
Punjab is owned by Badal Family here just like Sharif Khanadan in your punjab.

The majority of NRI Sikhs were not happy with what happened in 1984, but with the passage of time they learnt that Sikhs did participated in independent movement of India and sacrificed a lot and it is more beneficial for them to be with India than having a small separate state. They talked more about provincial autonomy than separation. There was a statement 'Sikhs are not separatist, they have been separated'. I can relate this statement with small provinces of Pakistan.

1984 wasn't an unprovoked incident like Babri 1991. It was final act of the entire tragedy that began in 1980. Secondly I never felt in entire life that Sikhs were ever separated, we have Parsi minority in India as well even Jews, why haven't they felt separated? In reality, it was the Sikhs who wanted to get seprated when both Hindus and Sikhs are just one people and in many cases, in Khati-Aroras, half family might be hindu and remaining half sikh. I never understood this psyche of Sikh which even Jews never had in India :)

First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen. So far I like it and it has maintained my attention throughout.
Next up: The Painted Veil

First Frost is on my reading list but I didn't know that it's the second novel in the series...the first one is called Garden Spells.
Re: What are you reading?
^I read Garden Spells. But I like First Frost better...which is surprising cuz usually sequels fall short. But I wasn 't as bowled over by Garden Spells. FF is nice though.
Out of Allen's book...her best work is The Sugar Queen. That one I really enjoyed.
Re: What are you reading?
Reading What the body remembers by Shauna Singh Baldwin.
Very interesting novel about a Sikh family living in pre partition Rawalpindi. Just read two chapters and got some new information about the Punjabi culture. There is this three paragraph description of Punjab’s history, which briefly cover everyone. From Aryans to Huns, Greeks, Buddhists, Hindu, Muslims, Sikhs and finally British.
Re: What are you reading?
I am almost done with First Frost and I have been enjoying it. Out of Allen's novels....try Sugar Queen. If you're into stories that infuse a bit of fairytale magic and extraordinary abilities, then I think you might enjoy it.
