Ahad-e-Nabvi Main Tamadun
Very interesting and informative book telling about the food, clothes, celebration of events that prevail in 6th and 7th century Hejaz during the time of Prophet (SAW). The source for these matters in Quran and Hadees.
Some interesting aspects, I have come across by going through few chapters:
i) There were ‘tandoor’ in Arab society and ‘nanbai / bakers’ were called Khabbab. Many households used to prepare saalan at home and sent aata to these Khabab. Khababs were of two types.. Tandoor were of two types. First owned by those khabab who bake roti for public against some payment. Secondly, some tandoors were shared by few families. Prophet (SAW) shared tandoor with a sahabiya Hazrat Umm e Hisham (RA).
ii) The main food of Arabs was meat. They used to have meat on daily basis and at least one course (main meal of the day) contained meat. Vegetables were not common in Makka, but were cultivated in Medina and also imported from Syria, etc.
iii) Most used meat was mutton, which was less expensive than camel’s meat. Camel was expensive due to its size and normally its meat was used on occasions like aqiqa, weddings and qurbani.
iv) In Makka, roti made from wheat was limited to elite class. In Medina, they normally used jo (barley) ki roti and Prophet (SAW) didn’t have wheat roti during his stay Meidna at Medina, except for few occasions.

Oh gosh, I know Kinsella has a huge fan following, but I couldn’t really get into her books, don’t find her as funny. I am thinking of trying out one if Helen Fielding’s books, the author if Bridget Jones’ Diary.
Re: What are you reading?
^^ agreed. Very cookie cutter.

Re: What are you reading?
@Muqaw: Yes, that’s one.
@Khatti: Yes, it’s in English. Simple, blunt writing…not an arduous read at all. Got it from the public library. Did not enjoy A Suitable Boy. One attempt was enough.
