Angela's Ashes (autobiography)

The author, Frank McCourt, talks about his bittersweet and poverty-ridden childhood in Ireland.

It's a really thick book, but a Pulitzer winner, and a very easy read.

Such a GOOD book!!!!!! It makes you grateful for the most basic of blessings that you have (food, clothes, bathroom, etc) But at the same time....the author's difficult childhood is a colorful and somewhat adventurous one. And there's so much humor in his writing. Autobiographies can often be a tough and dull read....but this is one that (despite its thickness) you can get through pretty fast cuz it's almost hard to put down. :)

Re: What are you reading?

I didn't know that was a book. I've seen the movie a few years ago on tv. It was quite sad.

Re: What are you reading?

the reader by bernhard schlink..the story revolves around a german boy n middle aged woman n the peculiar relationship they share..i've watched the movie n wanted to read the book

Another book I haven't read, but watched the onscreen version of, though in this case I knew the movie was an adaption of a book.

Sometimes certain movies prompt me to read the book too. In some cases, I never knew about the book until I watched the movie and read it was based on a book. And whenever I read the book, I mostly preferred the book over the movie.

I agree :k:

Re: What are you reading?

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

The Alchemist by Paolo Coehlo

Re: What are you reading?

i have just finished reading 'my sister's keeper' by jodi picoult.

the ending of the book and the ending of the movie are totally different!!

but the ending of the book was such a huge shock! holy moly! i never expected the story to take such a shocking turn! it starts out as a great book but the ending is awful! one of the worse i have ever read! totally dissapointed in the author!

i liked the movie's ending better!

Re: What are you reading?

Finished Angela's Ashes....I enjoyed it. Thinking of checking out the sequel, "Tis.

Right now, I'm reading...A Child Called It.

the holy woman - theres a sequel to that book, Typhoon :)

i think the books ending is shocking, i remember feeling disappointed too lol, but it was supposed to be sad irony i guess and i think it was a pretty good twist, even if t was sad! i havent seen the movie, didint know that they changed the ending, wonder how the author felt about that?!

did you know that author of angela's ashes died last year? he had cancer i think, not sure. have you read his second book? Tis i think its called :)

A Child Called It, one of the saddest books ever, it also got everyone jumping on the bandwagon i think and releasing their own sad real life stories.

oops forgot to mention the book im currently reading lol.
The Road, cant rememebr the authors name, an american guy i think. the book was made into a film released last year starring viggo mortenson. ive read about a quarter of it now and its really gripping.

^I'm almost done with this book......and I kind of have my doubts about whether the abuse actually took place. I can't explain it...there's just something about the language (maybe it's over-the-top...or flowery, for lack of a better word)...that makes me question it. Not done with it yet...but I went on the Internet and found that I'm not the only one who has such doubts.

Out of the two autobiographies I've recently read (this one and Angela's Ashes), I like Angela's Ashes better....Frank McCourt has a way with words. I'm looking forward to reading Tis....and hope the sequel is as good as the first book.

Re: What are you reading?

These are mainly for hte young adult section....but I love Chris Crutcher's books. They deal with teenagers who are in athletics but also deal with some heavy stuff.
For example, "staying fat for Sarah byrnes" is about a friendship between a former fat-kid and a girl who was burned in an accident as a child who now sits in a mental hospital unable to speak..and he tries to help her.

I used to read his books in HS, stopped for a while.and im falling in love with them again.

On another note, its really interesting to re-read a book after several years...something about the time passed and how you grow as a person can have an effect on the way you perceive a novel :)

Another one I read recently--The girl most likely to, by Poonam Sharma...its about an (Indian) ABCD in her late 20s and how she deals with her family, career, and finding a spouse. I didn't like it very much at all. Too cliche and boring.

Re: What are you reading?

khuda ki basti, the translated version by david matthews. He translates the writing literally so it ends up sounding awkward :/
