I think, first paragraph missed 'out of ---' before court agreement. As Ms. Roy is of the view that had Penguin went for legal battle, it would have got support from intellectuals at all levels.
That would be pretty bad reporting from WSJ. I tend to believe you are correct.
I am puzzled why the author from Chicago feels Penguin did all it could.

Now, I'm getting confused as well. But more confusing is 'Liberty Books' in Pakistan is announcing a new edition and offering special discount on pre-order. Looks the author got new publisher.

Here is a rhetoric question - Is Liberty Books doing the same for The Satanic Verse?
Went to B&N today to get some gifts for husband’s coworkers and I picked up The Witches: Salem 1692 for myself, along with DK Eyewitness Travel Top Ten Hong Kong (starting to plan summer vacay!)
Thanks. Will check out the Liberty Penguin book and Lajja.
Didn't know about the massacre.
I think the worst reaction against Babri Masjid demolition came from Bangladesh. May be it is due to the fact that Bengladesh got more Hindu population than Pakistan and population is not dispersed over vast and alienated areas as is the case with Hindus in Pakistan majority of whom live in Tharparkar (desert area alongside border area of Rajhistan). Further, Sindh (where Hindus are in majority) had a good history of religious pluralism till that time.
