Eleanor & Park
I am really loving it. Can anyone tell me why it feels so different kinda story?
Re: What are you reading?
^^ Its really a good book. I’ve recently read it as well.
For me, it was the candid way it was written. And the unexpected.
You expect people to react one way but they bring a different story with them all together.
I can’t say more without spoiling the book for you.
Have you guys ever seen the author? I have a feeling some of this story is more then fiction.

White Mughals
Nice one.
Re: What are you reading?
History of the Jews
What a coincidence or correlation. I'm reading the controversial ' The Hindus -An Alternative history' by Wendy Doniger. The book got banned in India and Penguin got a very harsh letter from Arundhati Roy for this.

The diary of a young girl - Anne Frank

Interesting.
Why did Roy send a harsh letter to Penguin? Bit confused. If she is the author she should send a harsh letter criticizing the ban. Sending a harsh letter to Penguin (assuming Penguin is the publisher) would imply sue is against the book. I don't see that being a possibility.
The book I am reading is not controversial. It is dry. And I am not the most disciplined reader.

If you buy it on discount, you may have to read only 750 pages?
Re: What are you reading?
The book is not written by Roy, but a western lady who is a researcher in Sanskrit, Indian religion and culture. The book was removed from shelf due to expected protest from a new conservative organisation which apparently works for preservation of history. Here is the link to letter written by Roy:

Re: What are you reading?
Ok. This makes sense. As I had expected, she is against st the banning of such books.
There is one inconsistency -
The WSJ article states “On Monday, Penguin India Pvt. Ltd, one of India’s largest publishing houses, decided to accept a court agreement that mandated they withdraw and pulp all copies of Wendy Doniger’s “The Hindus: An Alternative History,” first published”
In other words there was a court order. The author is also quite as stating Penguin did everything it could.
Ms. Roy states there was no court order. That penguin made an out of court agreement. Don’t know which is true.
My opinion - book bans - regardless of which religion is offended - are not healthy.

I think, first paragraph missed 'out of ---' before court agreement. As Ms. Roy is of the view that had Penguin went for legal battle, it would have got support from intellectuals at all levels.
