This is an interesting topic! When asked this question "where are you from?", I think most people take into consideration the particular circumstances of why they are being asked.
My hubby was born and raised in Pak then moved to New York, has been here ever since and is a US citizen.
If he is in New York and is asked that question, his reply would probably be "I'm from Pakistan" because the asker is likely looking to figure out his heritage.
If he is in another state within the US when asked the question, his reply would probably be "I'm from New York" because the asker is probably trying to figure out where he lives.
If he is in another unrelated country, his reply would probably be "Im from the USA" because the asker is probably looking to find out what country he lives in.
Its all in context yeah? But I think as far as what are you FIRST, I think his reply would be "a person...one with a diverse background."
