This is an interesting topic! When asked this question "where are you from?", I think most people take into consideration the particular circumstances of why they are being asked.
My hubby was born and raised in Pak then moved to New York, has been here ever since and is a US citizen.
If he is in New York and is asked that question, his reply would probably be "I'm from Pakistan" because the asker is likely looking to figure out his heritage.
If he is in another state within the US when asked the question, his reply would probably be "I'm from New York" because the asker is probably trying to figure out where he lives.
If he is in another unrelated country, his reply would probably be "Im from the USA" because the asker is probably looking to find out what country he lives in.
Its all in context yeah? But I think as far as what are you FIRST, I think his reply would be "a person...one with a diverse background."
suppose your a citizen of X country. We all know we have some kind of Pakistani background (that's why we're here on GS).. forget about that. So let's say country X goes to war, will you fight for this country? Why or why not? I mean your living in this country, it's no different than Pakistan, in fact, this country is way better than Pakistan, if it were not, you wouldn't be here.
British Azad Kashmiri! ] I was born in England and partly raised between A.K. and England. I have a special place in my heart for Pakistan having lived there for such a long time, and am equally proud of being British at the same time.
I'd consider myself British first - only and honestly because I don't want to say "pakistani" for the sake of it. I mean, yes my father was born in Pakistan, BUT I have no strong/deep connection with that country. Any little connection I had last year or so was broken by rishta-hungry aunties (a whole different topic altogether). It's a complex story, I could go on for ages but I don't have the energy to do so all I will say is w/e I am today (as a person/daughter/sister/friend etc), it is because I am a British Muslim.
I dont mind serving the country I am citizen of (USA that is). I love Pakistan but I am grateful to USA, cause whatever I am today is mainly because of the USA system.
War against muslims and war against Islam are two different things in my view. Sometimes, you need to crush some muslims to save islam. That has been done, even in the times of Sahaba’s

I agree with you we should be loyal to a country we are living in but what if the war is against Islam?
