What are you first?

If you are living abroad for some time now and are a citizen of that country, what do you consider yourself to be?

ie: Canadian or Pakistani? If Pakistani, then WHY ?

Re: What are you first?

Whenever I meet someone new, whether they are Canadian, American, or whatever, they never ask me if I'm Pakistani or Indian or whatever. They always ask straightway "Are you British?".

Certainly, since I moved to Canada, no-one but desis have asked if I'm Pakistani. All goray and chinese hear me talk and straightway decide I'm British, not Pakistani.

I guess it's the accent.

At any rate, the only country where I don't feel like a foreigner is in Britain.... so I feel more British than Pakistani.

In Pakistan, I stick out like a sore thumb the moment I open my mouth. Or even from the clueless way I amble about...

Re: What are you first?

i believe that i am honest human first than anything else. so ever i go i try to serve follow laws and rules and regulations of that country.

but ever since i moved abroad, i somehow start loving Pakistan more and more (well not its people, but the land…but ya i respect pakistaniz or the ones who respect pakistan as well). everyone around me considers me arab

i consider myself “canadian Pakistani”!

Re: What are you first?

Hmm nice question! Well i consider myself first as a Pakistani and than a Canadian. My first priority is always being a Pakistani because thats the truth and thats what i am. I was born here and spend my childhood here so that is where my roots are from hence if anything can describe me that has to be Pakistan.

At the same time i must say that i am very proud and privedged to have spent my teens in Canada. All those years that i have spent there have immensely helped me grow as a better and a confident person. Being the kind of person that i am who really believes in rights, Canada is the idea country for me to live in. Hence, it was quite difficult to move back to Pakistan but its true that where you have been born and spent your childhood that really stays special to you and it took me couple of years but i am fine now here and quite happy. Its like riding on two boats sometimes as at times i really feel that i could have been much better living in Canada and at other times i can't imagine living anywhere but in Pakistan because there is so apna pan here. So its kinda weird :).

But i am proud of the fact that i was born a Pakistani and than had an opportunity to live in Canada and become a Canadian too :). So i guess i have the best of both worlds.

Re: What are you first?

It's odd, strange to me when I say this, but I consider myself as a german, not as a pakistani. Somehow I have problems with most of pak ppl, so I stay away from them. I feel home when I'm with germans and when I'm with Pakistani I feel so strange, it's their culture, their approach towards everything, the aunties and the uncles, the cousins...

The germans make me feel home and when they see how good I speak german, you see the drool comin' out of their mouth saying "I know so many germans and you speak better than them"

Most of the Pakistani boys I know, same with turkey ppl, russian, arabic, they think they r something special...I see pakistanis living in these countries and joking about the government and the people who granted them a safe place to live...here they get everything and still dare to call germans "potatoe"...

this is why I maybe drifted away from pakistanis. I have so many german friends and when I talk about Islam with them, they say "Oh now I understand why this and that is so" while we stay under pakistanis, never pray, hurt others and then cry the media is bangin' us...why is the media bangin' us? Because we stay under us, we don't go out, don't spread out the message of love, of imaan and I tell you, the germans are lovely, very lovely and they r ready to hear what ya wanna say

Yesterday, before we played football I was wearing the socks and I realized, it has the german national colors, I never realized that, never thought about it before, then I put the shoes on and saw DFB...Deutscher Fußball Bund...The German Football Federation...I'm a true german in a brown skin!

Re: What are you first?

I am Canadian because I have Canadian passport...

I am Pakistani because I am 'made in Pakistan' :-)

Re: What are you first?

International man of mystery..

oh..behave

Re: What are you first?

Uh, the ridiculous British Accent......, this is what americans say
i hold only one passport/Citizen and so i consider myself Indian and i lived in abroad on-off from past 8 yrs
neither my accent changed nor my habits
though i stayed only 3 yrs in hometown, i still speak the accent of my native language

no problems with anyone so not away from anyone,
unless they want to be away from me :)

Re: What are you first?

i consider myself a canadian of pakistani origin

Re: What are you first?

Actually lakkis, the american ladies quote like the british accent. surveys here indicatethat people are trusting of someone with a brityish accent assume thatthe person is educated etc.

and you are talking about accent changing, some people's accent changes some people's does not sadly. same go for habits, we all have seen ppl at the extreme end of the inability to change and adapt i.e. ppl who need better grooming and introduction to a deodorant

but for someone like maddie who grew up as a child in UK, his accent did not have to changem, he just grew up with accent.

PS: believe me the indian accent is considered more ridiculous than the british one..much more so.

Re: What are you first?

Are you kidding me? Here yourself say this out loud with heavy Indian accent.

"Three Chicken for Two rupees"

You will change your mind about Indian accent.

Re: What are you first?

maybe the apu-kind, but not the punjabi-indian in US speaking english..thats kinda cool

Yeah so back to topic..i consider myself Pakistani. Despite being born/raised in US and speaking atrocious urdu/punjabi/gibberish.

Re: What are you first?

I am a definite Pakistani who has an american passport :konfused:

Re: What are you first?

Ok let me rephrase the question, how many of you would fight for your country (not Pakistan)...

Re: What are you first?

^Thats the question I am thinking if my children want to go to army should I send them or not? because they are U.S. citizens tough question I will send them to army if they are not going on war against muslims :bummer: but still its a tough decision.
