is there any other way to get paki channels like geo and ary without having to subscribe to dish network – that too for the whole year? I’ll have guests over from pakistan staying with me for couple of months and I wanted to get geo/ary for them for the duration of their stay to keep them entertained while I’d be at work during daytime.
I’ve heard bad things about dish network and want to avoid getting its service if at all possible.
Roman, there are many ways to hack those boxes. just get a Viewsat Ultra box and u can get the latest FTA keys etc. I am into dreambox, but that is not used so much in US, since card sharing is different in US. But I know many ppl who are in US and have hacked and installed their own flash image on the boxes which can then use the FTA keys to unscramble all the desi channels.
Ask around , I am sure someone will set u up, warna I have and know few ppl v. good, since I wrote some shell scripts for them for the linux based sat receivers.
Give your cable company a call - ours has a desi/indian channel that we can buy for an extra (10 or so) monthly....some cable co;s have it and others dont.
otherwise, your best bet would be to rent desi movies...and check out the local tv listings carefully. even basic cable in our area has a weekly desi programming schedule for 3 hours or so on sunday mornings.
ok, so I’ve finally decided to ditch comcast and get dish network…I think it’s worth the risk. their vip722 dvr looks cool with additional usb storage option.
I am ordering pretty much all the american movie channels but don’t know what to order for desi channels. which one do you recommend? I’m mainly looking for entertainment etc.
also, i heard that dish network folks can order cricket packages during the tournaments going around…I see ptv as being an option in the dish network paki packages…doesn’t ptv cover cricket itself? they used to when I was in Pakistan. so how come people of have to pay for the whole cricket packages?
I was just as skeptical as you about dish on the reception front and yeah during real bad weather u lose reception but its rare.
if you had not signed up with dish already, i would have told u to buy dish seperately so u dont have to sign up for a contract, and u can turn desi channels on and off as u please while still keeping your cable service. kinda like buying your own phone and not getting into a long term contract with your mobile service provider.
but, too late I guess.
as far as cricket goes, PTV buys the rights to boradcast the matches in pakistan, since this is not in Pakistan they cant show it.
If you can avoid the 18 month contract, do it. The locked me in an 18 month contract and raised the price of my package by $11 dollars in the middle of the contract. Upon calling them, they said they can do that. I felt very helpless. I still can't ditch them because there isn't any alternative to Dish Network. FTA sounds like a good idea but requires reprogramming evey so often.
These days GEO Super in Pakistan telecasts most of the cricket matches. Folks living in Europe also enjoy cricket on GEO for a flat monthly rate. However in US circket only come on PPV either on Dishnetwork or Direct TV. I have both the systems however I would prefer Dishnetwork over Direct. You have to buy cricket events as a PPV. Very Very rarely ARY telecast some ****ty tournament if it is not on PPV. In the last 4 years ARY has only telecasted 2 tournaments.
Finally one word of advice, please don’t go for PTV. Unless and until you have FTA
Get GEO/ARY digital combo package which is usually for $24.99 and Pak Music Package which has Indus Music and ARY Muzik for $7.99

I didn't know you can avoid the contract buy buying your own dish. I had my dish already installed when I moved into my house and I still got signed up for the contract. darn it.
The stupid guys from Faisalabad keep calling me for a new contract and they claim to be Dish Network Employees. I know they are not because I traced their number. They offer all kinds of hacking methods to renew an account in such a way that it would pose an existing customer as a "NEW" one and would allow the new customer promotions to existing customers. I have told them to remove me from their call list. I have also complained to Dish Network. I have my number registered in Do Not Call list but these guys do not care. They are retailers/agents. I am going to file a complaint against them with DNC.
Sorry for the side topic Roman, but I had to let it out.
PTV world doesnt show kirkit. its Dish own Channel dat the copy rights (i think channel 471 n 457). they show it as PPV.
n each pakistani tournament costs around $200.
so dont have dish cuz kirkit.
p.s. dont get ny pakage with indus TV in it. (its pathetic n boring)

Asif most of these "pakistani' guys who will call you on behalf of Dish are actually Indians. When they talk to a Pakistani, they will try to act like a Pakistani. I guess sometimes they do a good job however mostly you know from their accent they are not Pakistani. Alot of my friends have received calls from them. Couple of weeks ago I got a call from Imran from Karachi. After figuring it out that he is not a Pakistani, I ask him where is he from Khi. He had to admit that he is an Indian. So anyway bottom line is that don't deal with any such callers. If you have Dish Network talk ti them directly.
kirkit is only bonus sorta thing…I was just curious..if it’s not there then that deosn’t really matter…I can get the highlights via youtube.
bad weather reception once in a while is probably not an issue either…I’m sure I’d have enough content recorded on dvr on any give time to flip through to mind occasional inconvenience.
I’ll see if I can get away with leasing the dvr but not signing the contract.
any other suggestions/tips are welcome and appreciated. thanks.
unlikely, that u will lease and not sign. one other thign u can do is just get dish for desi channels, I think they are only concerned with a threshold of how much you are going to pay. but u may want to check, so u keep dish for desi and cable for other stuff.
and bad weather is not an issue, the only annoyance is if you want news and stuff on what the hell is going on during bad weather, but thats what radio and internet is for.
fraudiyay…that’s a good idea..that if I can just get dish for desi channels without signing up and keep my comcast. :k: I’ll call them and see if it’s all possible.
Roman, sawal hai, mind na karieN, why are you getting an 18 month deal for mehmaans who will stay with you for a few months only? such such das chakker ki ai? :D chol nai khilanay na khila, saadi duawaaN te le lay.
