I read an article in the paper recently stating that the average marriage age since the 1970s has risen for both men and women (the research was carried out in the UK - see below) and it made me think what the average age of marriage in Pakistani culture is these days. I know for my mum’s generation it was quite normal for girls to get married at 15-16, sometimes even younger. But looking at pictures of modern brides (just check the ‘BRIDAL PICS’ thread) women seem to be a lot older these days.

So, what age did you get engaged, and what age did you get married? And how old was your husband for both events?

I think a mixture of everything: High demands from both sides, wanting to have a stable career/education done, the natural decline in rishta coming in, hence longer time between rishtas. Just to name a few ...

Didn't really have an engagement. Pretty much went straight from "baat pakki" to wedding a couple of months later.

my sister got engaged at the age of 29 and married at 30 and same for me, i got nikahofied when i was 29 and will be 30 on my wedding day InshaAllah. For us, i feel that we got married at the time Allah had ordained, especially for my sister as scores of people came to see her for rishtas for a few years and none came back.

I think it is because when aunties come with the proposals of their sons, they want someone gori chitti, nazuk, lambi, doctor and a bunch of other specifications. the entire female population is not fitted to meet their shallow shopping list. this is why females are getting married late. an aunty told me that such attractive and good girls are sitting at home simply because they have a sanwala complexion. really sad.

You're very brave Sammii and so is your sister. Thank You for sharing this wonderful reality with us. Feels so relaxing knowing that there is no issue in today's age if a girl gets married in her late 20s or even 30s. Yes, truly the rishtas/weddings happen only when ALLAH Wills. It must have been a very tough journey for the both of you and your family till you both must have got engaged. Would love to hear more from girls getting married in their 29s, 30s. Please if possible do share how you steadfast you and your family remained during this entire journey and how do you feel about getting married at this stage. Lots of best wishes for you and your sister,forever.

If a girl is 28+ already then age is added to the list of reasons of not getting a good proposal. Previous reasons stay intact though like height too short, complexion not fair, too skinny, too fat, working, not the right profession etc etc ... All the (lame) filters that most of the families have when they start looking.

I did not get engaged, instead had my nikah done at 22, he was 25.
Insha'allah having a walima in a few months, I am 24 and he is 27 :)

being unmarried in your late 20s isn't a death sentence! the cycle has to break somewhere so how about girls do it first? stop putting up with ridiculous demands and feeling bad about yourselves because you're not gori/lambi/patli/doctor/whatever. go out and get a life for yourself! use your brains, get a career, enroll in a masters program, travel, meet people- DO SOMETHING. don't just sit around at home feeling like the world is ending because someone's mother hasn't come along and given you her stamp of approval. seriously. its 2012, ladies, step up to the plate! the right guy will come along when he's meant to, so stop fretting and worrying and stressing about it. live your life. that's what you'll regret not doing when you're 75, not that you didn't get married until you were 30.
