Edhi told Geo News that US immigration officials had questioned him for eight hours at the airport. “They asked me why I don’t reside permanently in the US despite having a green card,” he said. “I told them that I’m a social worker and I have to travel extensively around the world, and so cannot live there permanently,” he added.

Edhi said he had faced the same behaviour from US immigration officials when he visited America in June last year.

According to Geo News, the immigration officials allowed him to leave following the intervention of Pakistani officials, but did not return his passport and other documents. Edhi said the US officials, through a letter, had also asked him to appear in court for a hearing on February 20. Separately, talking to News One television channel, Edhi said US authorities apparently wanted to hinder his social work. He said he, his wife and their granddaughter had been living in a small room for the last month as the US authorities were refusing to return his passport.

Chief Justice of pakistan... Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudry...completed 36,000 pending cases ...in 1.5 years..one of my teacher land case was solved automatically..when he recieved a letter from SC....which was pending for so many years...:)

Poor fisherman in karachi who have to fil the biggers guy’s pockets in order to survive in the market. ‘the contract system’ by which they Can’t keep their hard earned to himself…

true…there is poverty..so much poverty…who denies that…but nobody on airports make them naked…nobody say some bakwas to them..leave our land…as they are not 3rd class citizens..as all pakis living in US…UK .etc are…

few interior sindh vaderras..and few punjab sde districts…again poverty…but still they are not 3rd class citizens..as they dont hear such baighairat type remarks..and behaviour ..as all pakis observe as its not your home land…or Nani Amma Da Karr…you people are immigrant..and you have to face that…

same is the case with** naudaultiyai** standing on the King Burger …or Pizza Hut making burgers.or pizzas ..standing on gas filling stations…and in pakistan..they used to visit near by sugar cane field for bathroom…with 2 mudstones in pockets…now …cannot speak any word of Urdu …HUH…!!!

PS: I have just given the example of** Edhi shameful case** ..what happened to him…Plz. dont try to convert it into poverty problems ..of Pakisatn…neither…i like to discuss it with girls…then…if i will say something…then people..will start saying me rude ..disrespect…this and that…better for you ..to leave the thread…otherwise..then…i will not see…in front of me..there is a woman..or a man…!!!

the issue here is not poverty. the issue is how much rights do the poor people have...as an immigrant citizen i enjoy more rights than a first class paki citizen has.. no one tells me that i need to leave the country since i am an immigrant.. unless i go against immigration rules/ laws... hence nullifying ur argument ..

pls check ur resouces again.. if not a 100% its far more than a handful of the land owners supressing worker families for generations...

i havent heard baigharat type remarks here ever for being an immigrant after having lived here for some 18 yrs ..so i wonder where you get ur facts from..

This whole obsession about being a "3rd class citizen" if you live in the west is really immature and ignorant. Getting naked in the airport is another silly obsession that has no basis in reality.

DL man. Get a grip. I mean I'm sure we would find citizens of Darfur who would try to convince you that Darfur is the Utopia to be, that it maybe has some small probs etc. You are much the same. Pak has troubles. Big ones.

Every society has its good and its bad. You dont see that - or if you do, you wont admit it. You know, if you were to come to USA, I WOULD invite you to my home with welcomes, show you what life is actually like here - the good AND the bad. I really dont think the same would be true of you. It WOULD be lovely if pak were this utopia that you purport it to be but sadly my friend, there are many, many more "3rd class citizens" over there in pak than there are here in the USA. And its not that we are here "for the money" as you so ignorantly put it. We are here because its a better place to be. For now, INshallah. Inshallah, Pak will one day be the better place. But thats not the case now.

I'm very sorry for you, for whatever injustice you suffered that has caused you to hate with such blindness But things won't get better on this planet till people like you open your eyes and let the reality in. USA and its foreign policy has big issues. So channel your energies to changing it - instead of just spewing all this useless and ignorant hatred at people who do not deserve it.

This is a clear case for mis-use of GC. If he was an US citizen then nobody would hae even bothered, but when your a GC holder you are still a citizen of your native country and the US govt has provided you with a GC because you want to Live and work in the US not your native country.

so here is some information on greencard which may have played a big part in it. Although I have to say immigration officers at JFK are not always very professional. I mostly have had no issues, and I was travelling a lot internationally for work a few years ago, I have had one issue and even then the 2 people that were being jerks were told off by their own colleagues

THE ABC’S OF IMMIGRATION - PRESERVING GREEN CARD STATUS DURING TRIPS ABROAD

It is an all too common situation – after years of bureaucratic entanglements, a person finally obtains lawful permanent residence in the US, only to find they still have business or family concerns that will keep them out of the US for an extended period of time. **Often, the lawful permanent resident (LPR) will try to reenter the US, only to have an INS or consular official tell them they have abandoned their permanent residence status. While an extended absence alone is not grounds for revoking permanent residence, it is one factor the INS considers very important. **Therefore, when planning an extended trip abroad, it is necessary to plan ahead to avoid abandonment.

Among the many factors that influence the decision on abandonment are the length and reason for the absence, and the number and type of connections the LPR maintains in the US. There are many steps a LPR can take to demonstrate their intent to maintain their status in the US.

A commonly held but mistaken assumption is that a visit every year to the US will preserve LPR status. While an LPR needs only the green card to reenter the US after an absence of less than one year, this is not enough to indicate the intent to remain a resident of the US. The LPR must take additional action to preserve their status.

One of the most important factors in preserving permanent residence is to continue filing tax returns in the US. Because of international tax laws, there will often be no tax owed to the US government, but failure to file a return is almost always considered a sign that LPR status has been abandoned. The LPR should also maintain a bank account and credit cards in the US. These accounts should be as active as possible. For example, if the LPR is employed abroad, the salary should be deposited in the US account. The LPR should also continue to renew their US driver’s license. If possible the LPR should purchase property in the US.

If the LPR’s absence is due to employment, a letter from the employer detailing the terms and length of employment is very important. If the absence is for family or personal reasons, these should be well documented. While such reasons are acceptable, the ease with which they can be manipulated means they should be very well documented.

Of course, the LPR can also obtain a reentry permit if the absence is to be greater than one year (after absences of less than one year, the green card is sufficient for reentry). However, many of these same factors are involved in the decision of whether to issue such a permit, and even with a reentry permit the LPR can still be deemed to have abandoned status.

It is important that the LPR traveling abroad for an extended period is prepared to document their intent to remain a US resident if questioned by immigration or consular officials. One of the best ways to do this is carry copies of relevant documents in a single location that can easily be presented to officials. Among these documents should be copies of past tax returns, deeds showing property ownership, records of bank account activity, relevant letters from employers, and letters explaining the purpose of the extended absence.

One final note – Congress did change the law a few years ago to hold that permanent residents who leave the US for more than six months can be held inadmissible if there is something in their background now that would have barred them from getting a green card had it been true at the earlier date. For example, if one cannot meet the public charge requirements or has gotten a communicable disease, then they could face problems reentering. For most, this will probably not be a major concern.
