Westernisation in Pakistan

My friend recently came back from Lahore and Karachi.
He checked out the colleges and said that the girls were wearing short skirts and he saw a girl with a see thru top.
He said that in KFC it was just the local pickup joint.
Pakistanis seem so intent on imitating Amrica and Britain that they adopt their styles and culture. It just seems so fake and the innocence i assocated with Pakistani culture seems to be gone.
What do you guppies think. That it is better we are moving with the times? or it’s a shame that we never see hijab anymore?

people should be allowed to wear what they like .

I support the right to walk around naked if a person chooses to.

although most people look better in clothes because they are so unhealthy .

and I would disagree that wearing less clothes makes you less innocent.

I agree with you about less clothes doesn't mean less innocence. I never suggested that.
I was referring more to the culture in Pakistan and how it has changed.
Why do i agree with that point. There are many girls who wear hijab for family for example but don't give Islam importance.
What i am saying that with the western culture in pakistan a lot of people come across fake.

fashion in what people wear seems to travel around the world .

and so I dont think that a pakistani person needs to worry to much about appearing fake .

in the west we have borrowed indian and pakistani clothes stlyes too .

especially the hippies used to wear loads of indian ,pakistani and afghan clothing .

leave it people to decide. that is the only way to find out who is the true believer.
why it should be restricted pakistani
when overseas pakistani "enjoy" all the "sins".

sheikh ji, aap ka friend bohot lamba choro he

ok i really doubt that girls are wearing miniskirts in colleges

Most colleges have a dress code, or so I thought...

jeans, shirts - yeah , i've seen some of that

Plus, pple wear what they want inside their homes, but miniskirts and see-thru shirts in colleges - i doubt it.

At least not in Karachi - and Karachi folks are probably the most likely to wear non-traditional clothes.

Mr. Sheikh your friend is quite right! I've been there in June for 2 weeks after sever years and I can tell you this is nothing as compared to what I have seen.

Honestly I don't like whatever is happening in Pakistan in the name of modernization or westernized-freedom.

Over here where I live being topless is noooooo problem because government has decided that. But let me ask you one question, specially those who believe in "whatever u wear its your problem":

Do you accept this if your sister, your daughter, your mother or who ever you respect does the same thing in front of you or your family??? Probably you are not gonna like this?????

And my dear Mr. "J-too-Mad" don't misunderstand when I say I do believe in live and let live theory, but not on the cost of my religion or my culture...Thank you!

I prefer tumb impression

Sorry bro if this guy is a good friend of yours. But he is a big choru.

why should people be told what to wear .

and it wouldent matter to me if any of my family walked around naked .

He didn't say a see thu top was the norm...he saw one girl but i have heard about short skirts before and i have heard from pakistanis about the behind closed doors relations that take place in the liberal colleges.

sheikh - in regards to relations taking place in liberal colleges...

what do you expect when families avoid talking about sex and when the word "sex" is a taboo in society? Even classical dance isn't appreciated by most people - its seen as a vulgar dance and confused with mujras, when its really a wonderful and graceful art form.

With a society that doesn't let men and women TALK about anything and the excuse is Islam - what do you expect? Sexual tension is bound to build up, when there is no respect for religion, and yet when certain rules about romance are stringently enforced.

Sadly, pakland is FULL of desparados.

who was speaking of jeans? challo atleast W is now the second dumbest president on this planet

I propose all such transgressors be stoned to death & such colleges be closed.

After all how is any better than stopping those who wear hijab from going to school?!

At this age …age of Sheikhs friend ..b/c of hormone surge ,all he dreams of day in day out is naked bossomed girls & miniskirt dressed legs .

If out of 100 girls he only picks on one such flamboyant girl then it is result of adolescent fantasy & hormonal surge NOT indicative of statistical relevence or crdibility !!!

If girls “bother” you turn yoyurv face away from the t.v. or the person in front of you .

Believe me such exhbityionists are less than 1 in million …statistically not significant to be bothered unless ofcourse you r an adolescent boy in heat yourself

I dont think you’re ever find a girl wearing a miniskirt in Pakistan. What goes on behind closed doors is different, and not anyone’s business anyway.

It’s exaggerated, but not completely off the mark. Last month, I spent 10 days in Lahore. I have lived there, almost my entire life, and this time, I did notice a sharp increase in girls clad in western attire. During my stay, I only saw one mini-skirt clad girl (age 17-18). A lot of girls now go with jeans and T's.

To be honest, I think my impressions may not be wholly indicative of the general state of affairs for two reasons:

  1. I visited some of the most westernized eating joints (Café Zouk, Freddie's Café, PC etc) so naturally the crowd that hangs around there is bound to be more liberal. In Freddie’s Café they have hostesses who, themselves, dress in long skirts and shirts. Pizza Hut had introduced trouser clad hostesses many months ago.

  2. During summer, many expatriate Pakistani families visit back home, and I thought a large number of girls I saw were probably just visiting from Europe or Americas.

These two factors, in my view, may have given me the wrong impression of the state of westernization amongst our young generation.

Having said that, from my time when I was in college in Lahore, I do know that many college-girls in Lahore indulge in all kinds of activities, which, some of us may find disconcerting. The proportion of girls engaging in affairs and, in many cases, pre-marital sex, is much higher than what we'd like to think. Unfortunate it may be, but it seems like a fact of life.

As far as dresses go, while on one hand I agree it’s their choice, however from a societal standpoint, as long as they appropriately cover the body, I personally have no problem. I only rue the fact that too many of them treat our own culture and our dresses with apparent disdain and blindly try to follow the dresses, which they see in western movies and culture, and consider it superior or a sign of progress. That’s not a good sign.
