Well I think that in those days homosexuality was not that common and mehboob was always referred as Muzakkar form . Thats just what I think

atleast old method of representing love through candle and moth (Shama o Parwana) was more subtle than this Attar ke londay, Turk Bachcha & Mughal Zada.

UZ, what I am saying is that direct reference of gender was not necessary and if poets wanted to, they could’ve easily avoided that instead of talking about a male gender in their poetry.
