Re: were our poets …homosexual?
I guess they were not homosexuals but they had gender identity disorder(GIS) , they were females in the body of males that is why they were in love with under age boys.
The fact that all of them were Muslims therefore they could not practice homosexuality makes my theory more plausible. ![]()
Re: were our poets ...homosexual?
Yes uncle, they were all Muslims and therefore never touched alcohol too. They have also problem in calling limo pani as Sharaab. Wo Punjabi main kehte hain na... bus tor banai thi :)
Re: were our poets ...homosexual?
I mean, if they were homosexual, wouldn't poetry be the only means of expressing it lol. (The ambiguity of it all)
Pin it on Islamic and/or desi culture and/or poetry culture that females aren't/weren't referred to and feminine senses less used/avoided. And I mean, at the end of the day most of these people did have wives and such (which may or may not be saying much).
were our poets ...homosexual?
If you read Yaadon Kee Baraat, we will realize that homosexually was more common amongst above mentioned class than we like to think

were our poets ...homosexual?
And you are here because a homosexual topic for me is automatically a heterosexual topic for you, right!

It's somewhere in my bedside drawer right now home
I also think though people were far more secure in their sexuality then than now. Now a days, everyone tries to make all these guys as homosexuals. And for the record, poets are by nature fairly awkward people, in some manner or another. And there is also the matter of the poet (persona) versus the person. And I guess last might be the actual poetry. For example, there is some couple by Hafiz where he talks about leaving Shiraz and you could find pages upon pages of what others interpret it as, but the dude was just pissed off one day and left lol (I don't remember the exact story now but I have it in my notes somewhere).
I won't doubt homosexuality was present, it's there in the some of the older Urdu lit too, but I doubt most of these people were in fact gay.
Re: were our poets ...homosexual?
But was it ok to express your homosexualty through Poetry? Even in this age, its consider a taboo, except for some very modern societies, and I am referring to poets of about 200 years ago
You are assuming homosexualtiy is more acceptable now than 200 years ago, yes in the West but not necessarily so in the East. Eastern soceities even Muslim, were probably more sexually open than the West. Many males had male lovers. They may not have been homosexual but bisexual or even just a fluid sexuality without any stamping or labels to say who they were. Some of the Mughal rulers had male lovers. Read Babur Nama and it has references to homosexual relationships.

Both of you are right. When I said homosexual, I meant indulging in it on side, more like for a flavor
Re: were our poets ...homosexual?
From Sufi poetry it is clear that gendrs should not be taken literally, nor love related talk for that matter ... They often replaced plutonic awe and respect kind of love with sensual love. Or as Mirch noted there would be as much gender confusion as homosexual issues. Omar Khayyam Persian was often confused for being a lover of women and lover of booze, but these were his expressions of loving the Divine and feeling His Presence as though he was intoxicated by it.
Now it may be that it became popular to start fumbling around as pseudo poets by indulging in wine and cavorting with boys and girls, but I'm sorry those people missed the point entirely.
I don't think therefore any of them were homosexuals, wine lovers, womanisers, etc .... So much so that they had to gain a reputation for being the above in order to gain a strange sort of credibility for being serious poets.
Re: were our poets ...homosexual?
From Sufi Poetry I remember Shah Hussain and his lover Maadhoo Laal (now combinely know Maadhoo Laal Hussain and a festival Mela e Charaghan also followed in their memory). The relationship between the two was remained under suspicions, but that was not surely homosexual.
Before this Maadhoo Laal Hussain, Ameer Khusro's love for Nizam u Din Auliya and Khusro's calling him Mehboob are part of the Sufi poetry. Baba Bulhay Shah's 'Mera Yaar nahin man da' refers to his Murshid Shah Inayat.

Re: were our poets ...homosexual?
From what I have read , that Urdu Shairee borrowed the concept of male mashooq/mehboob from Farsi Shairee. Farsi Shairs mostly used to go to maykhan/bar to hold mushaira where the bartenders/saqi's were young male boys and they used to praise those saqis and their naz o andad. I do not remember the reference. I will try to find it out.
