I just heard a hadith that states drinking water while standing up is also sunnah.
Sahih, narrated by Ali r.a.!!!
All my life i’ve heard the total opposite.
But apparently thats not true.

Re: ~! Well I must say...
Can you post the full hadith.
I know that drinking Aab-e-ZamZam while standing is Sunnah. Did not know about otherwise.
Re: ~! Well I must say...
^ yep its shocked me too.
Today in class, we were all sitting, and the Alim mentioned this. I forgot the reference totally.
But i'll try to get it.
So we asked him, maybe it was Aab e zam zam, or maybe cuz he did wudhu with that water, and he explained thats not the case. U can do it standing or sitting, it doesn't matter.
All those bombardments from my mom and stuff to drink sitting down :p wow..
This was a shocker...lemme try to find the thadith, or if someone has it can they?
Re: ~! Well I must say...
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
There are sound Hadith that tell Muslims not to eat or drink while standing. Muslim reported from Anas Ibn Malik that he said: "The Prophet told (Muslims) not to drink while standing up". When Anas was asked about eating while standing up he replied by saying: "that is much worse".
There are also other sound Hadith that prove the lawfulness of drinking and eating while standing up. Al Bukhari reported that Ali came to the gate of the courtyard (of the Mosque) and drank (water) while he was standing and said, "Some people dislike to drink while standing, but I saw the Prophet doing (drinking water) as you have seen me doing now."
Al Tirmizi reported in a sound Hadith from Ibn Omar that he said: "We used to eat, during the era of the Prophet, while walking and we used to drink while standing up".
The scholars have different opinions about this issue. The most sound one is that whoever eats or drinks while standing up does not commit a sin but it is preferable to avoid doing so.
Allah knows best.
Amr ibn Shu’aib radiyallahu anhu relates from his father, and he from his (Amr’s) grandfather, that he said, “I had seen Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam drinking water whilst standing and also whilst sitting.”
*Commentary *
There are many narrations mentioned wherein Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam prohibited the drinking of water whilst standing. A narration of Sayyidina Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu is mentioned in Sahih Muslim that Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam said, “No person should stand and drink water, and if one forgetfully stood and drank it, it should be vomited out.” Some ulama have summed both the deed and the prohibition in a few ways. Some ulama are of the opinion that the prohibition came later and repeals the previous law. Some ulama hold the opposite view that the narrations where he stood and drank water repeals the one that prohibits it. According to a well-known saying, the prohibition is not that of a Shar’ee or unlawful nature, but as an etiquette. It is also a blessing and kindness. Ibn Qayyim and others have mentioned the harm that standing and drinking causes. In short, Sayyidina Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam standing and drinking shows it being permissible to do so, and that it is not haraam to stand and drink water. It is best not do so, as this is against the recommended practice and one will be committing a makrooh act by doing so.
Ibn Abbas radiyallahu anhu says, “I gave Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam Zam-zam water to drink. He stood and drank it.”
Re: ~! Well I must say...
it's a hadith not a Word of God,
does it really matter?
Re: ~! Well I must say...
^ of course it matters....
Re: ~! Well I must say…
Yes it does…A Hadith is a saying of the Holy Prophet :saw: and part of Quran’s commands to ‘Follow the Messenger…’
True, there may arise some confusions, but not in the minds of the Ulemas…It is our own ignorance…
Re: ~! Well I must say...
It is a Sunnah to drink ONLY water from the well of Zamzam, standing up.
It is a Sunnah to drink all other water while sitting down.
Re: ~! Well I must say…
^ So I knew all this time…but little did I know.
Ditto :k:

Lajawab, please expand on this for me. I am not sure I get your point.
Re: ~! Well I must say…
great I didn’t know it either…thanx for sharing cresssi ![]()
Re: ~! Well I must say…
Again, Hadith is not a Word of God.
it is word of men, religious, pious men surely but only Men.
Re: ~! Well I must say...
^ hadith is words of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), who said nothing but what was divine revelation unto him from Allah Almighty....
if u think hadith refers to words of pious men (not the prophet) then u r mistaken....
Re: ~! Well I must say...
How did Quran come to us and how did it become Word of God?
Kindly, make me understand this.
Re: ~! Well I must say...
i was just reading bout it yesterday..and what i read was that drinking while drinking is equivalent if a "cat" is drinking water wid u..so it really shocked me..since i drink water standing up all the time!
Re: ~! Well I must say...
^ I'm somewhat confused. Could you please clarify?
Out of curiosity, how did a cat come/fit in to the scene?
Re: ~! Well I must say...
^ ive read that too, it means that cats drink with slurps and stuff, where they spill water here and there, in a "junglee" type of way..
Re: ~! Well I must say...
Standing and drinking is junglee or drinking water in a slurping manner is junlee?
Re: ~! Well I must say...
Yea I read in Shaih Al-Bukhari once that standing up while drinking or drinking with your left hand is what "jinn" do or something like that =\
lemme go look for it.
