what do i do whr i m wrong?
how do u cook …how people cook the thick custard :frowning:

Re: weird custard problem :(

Do you use the appropriate quantity of custard and milk? Do you add the custard powder into all the milk, or do you mix it with a little bit of milk first, and then add that mixture to the rest of the milk?

Re: weird custard problem :(

^ does this all make a difference?? didnt know that. shud v ideally mix it with milk before puttin in the pot? i also had the same prb yesterday.. i mixed the said no of spoons of custard with water and then put in the milk.. all at once but kept stirring.. wondr what i did wrong. it was thick and once it was chilled it was a bit patla... and shakin here and there rather than consistent!

Re: weird custard problem :(

It is very common problem. Use a bit more custard powder then usual. result will be the consistancy u want after its cold. its dat simple.

Re: weird custard problem :(

I usually first boil milk to make it little thicker, can add half and half in it for better taste and more thickness, then I add lots of custard powder mixed in little extra milk.Remember one thing adding lots of custard powder alone can give you powdery flavour so might need to add some heavy cream, half n half or anything like that.

Re: weird custard problem :frowning:

who in today’s times has time to make custard, get it ready made.

Re: weird custard problem :(

Mall, yes, I find that mixing and dissolving the powder with a small amount of milk, and then adding it to the rest of the milk, works well.

Re: weird custard problem :(

hmmmmmmm but shudnt the water do the same trick that milk does??? and shud we put the custard mixture all at once ya lil by lil?

Re: weird custard problem :(

no dont use water it willl make it patla always use whole milk for mixing custard .

Re: weird custard problem :(

also use wooden spoon while mixing custard in boiling milk

Re: weird custard problem :(

Use milk and use more custard powder than what the recipe suggest. Always boil the milk on low heat and add the custard mixture slowly while stirring.

Re: weird custard problem :(

Make sure you bring the milk to another boil after adding the custard (mixed with cold milk) in it, that makes it nice and thick.
Don't take it off the heat unless the texture gets thicker.

Re: weird custard problem :(

easy method !!

  • Mix custard powder and sugar in a glass ( depending on quantity you want)

  • Boil milk in pan to boiling point, then turn the gas down and let it simmer

  • put in the custard mix from the glass into pan and stir

  • keep stirring and put the gas up on half , it will get thick!!

Re: weird custard problem :(

Mall, Suhaina, if you follow the advice, then let us know if it worked.

I'm glad we had this custard talk. In fact 'weird custard problem' is probably my favourite ever thread title.

Re: weird custard problem :(

u mean the milk alone shud b boiled on low heat rite (before addin custrd mixture)

Re: weird custard problem :(

  • keep stirring and put the gas up on half

didnt get this line

Re: weird custard problem :(

as in put the gas up higher and stir!!! its the stirring that helps thicken !!

Re: weird custard problem :(

^Actually, it won't thicken until you bring it to another boil..... so yeah, SoniaA is correct... when you increase the heat and keep stirring it brings it to another boil and the texture thickens.

Re: weird custard problem :(

it works for me :P

the amount of times i made custard it got ruined until ami actually showed me and my brothers how to make custard !

Re: weird custard problem :(

oh thanks sonia and MIV.. but ill tell u something.. i made custard in an old pot(or shud i say it was non stick or of normal company... dunno the reason) and custard pot mein lag raha tha... and i didnt stir alot due to the fear that the black burning custard will come up so wot i was doin was using a whisk i was stirrin the custard but only opar opar se not andar daal daal ke.... i came to the conclusion maybe the quality brand of custard was bad??
